TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1936 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THREE Radical Changes In Hockey Left Wing, NetI Positions May Get New Man Merrill, Shalek Favored To Receive Call; David May Not Be Used Radical changes in the Varsity hockey line-up appeared probable after the conclusion of last night's practice session, the first real work- out of 1936. Irving Shalek, Boston junior seemed destined to replace Reed Low in the Wolverine nets when the team meets the Ilderton A. C. of London at the Coliseum Wednesday evening and Jack Merrill, whose con- sistent play in the first two tilts of the season prior to the Christmas holidays won him considerable praise, was favored by Coach Lowrey to take over Johnny Fabello's berth on left wing. Captain Larry David who sustained a shoulder injury in the final period of the London game and was kept out of the McMaster contest as a re- sult, still complained of a stiffness in his arm, but whether or not he will be in shape to play against Ilder- ton Wednesday depends upon an ex- amination at the Health Service to- day. Will Oppose Vets Ilderton is one of the strongest hockey clubs in Ontario and will present a veteran team to oppose Michigan with a record of three wins and one tie. , The Ilderton Club will open the second half of the Michigan hockey year and will be followed by the Chatham Maroons who play in the Coliseum Saturday night. Vic Heyliger, who made the trip home to Concord, Mass., for the first time in a year-and-a-half, returned to town Sunday and looked ready to continue his scoring spree at the ex- pense of Wolverine opponents. He will team up as usual with Dick Berryman who spent a considerable part of the vacation period prac- ticing in the Coliseum. Dick looks ready for a great year. He has picked up speed and becomes a real scoring threat. Bengman will be a dangerous man for rival defenses to cope with this winter and may be expected to do a major share of the twine bulg- ing. Simpson May Play In the event that Captain David is not available for the Ilderton tilt, Bob Simpson Vhoturned insuch a creditable performance against Mc- Master, will again fill in at defense. Big Bert Smith will occupy the other defense post beside either Dav- id or Simpson, and Lowrey thought last night that Shalek would be in the nets. In two games the opposition has scored ten goals on Low and Lowrey is ready to give Shalek an oppor- tunity to prove his worth. The re- placement of Fabello by Merrill, Lowrey said, was due to Fabello's lack of aggressiveness, but added that neither change was definite and de- clined to name a starting line-up until after tonight's practice. No.'s 4, 5, 6, 7 Townsend, Fishman Star In Loss Seven Dual Meets Carded Athough going down to defeat before Indiana's Hoosiers, 33-27, Michigan played some brilliant basketball, and of this Townsend's and Fishman's play topped all. Both men tallied six points apiece tieing with Rudness for high scoring. Fishman sunk all three of his shots from long distances and in doing so helped keep Michigan in the run- ning. J. Townsend played steady, fast and sure basketball. His sure passing and good shots helped to keep the Wolverines in a threatening position throughout the whole game. Cagers Lose First Big Ten Battle, 33-27 Wolverines Fail To Hold Lead Gained In Opening MinutesOf Game (Continued from Page 1) an outside chance that Tamagno would be in condition to start against Minnesota Saturday night. Thd other individual duals besides' the Fechtman-Gee fracas kept the crowd on edge. Rudness held the highly-touted Ken Gunning, speedy little Hoosier forward, to six points while he collected the same number himself. Gunning had an all-around bad night, however, missing several set-up shots. The other duel was between John Townsend and Vern Huffman, old rivals of high school days. Both played good ball with Huffman outscoring Townsend and Townsend outpassing Huffman. Rudness opened the scoring, hitting a foul, and then dribbled around John Townsend for a basket after Earl Meyers, who started in place of Tamagno had connected twice from the foul line. Stout made the Hoosier's first basket on a tip-in shot. Michigan held an 8 to 5 lead when Indiana's offense began to click and the visitors ran up a 15 to 9 total before Meyers and Rudness dropped in two fouls to leave the score 15 to 11 at the half. Indiana continued widening the margin with the opening of the sec- ond half and made it 18 to 11 when a nice hook shot by Dick Evans, a beautiful shot Gee to Rudness to John Townsend, and a basket by Meyers who took Townsend's pass tied up the score at 18 all. Then Indiana turned on the steam again and piled up another lead which Fishman's long shots almost over- took. However, after getting with- in two points, 29 to 27, the Mich- igan defense, in its anxiety to get the ball before the final gun sounded, left itself open to Willis '.Hosler and Huffman hit two set-ups to clinch the victory for Indiana. Michigan and Indiana both were hot on their foul shots with the Wolverines hitting nine out of 11 at- tempts and the Hoosiers connecting seven out of nine times. Pu cinelli Leads League Hitting NEW YORK, Jan. 6. - (/P)-King- pin of International League batsmen in 1935 was George Puccinelli, clout- ing outfielder who will get another major league trial with the Phila- delphia Athletics this spring. Puccinelli, the official averages showed today, not only captured the batting championship with a .359 average but dominated virtually all the other slugging departments. George scored the most runs, 135; chalked up the most hits, 209, only player in the circuit to top the 200 mark; led in doubles with 49 and in home runs with 53; hit for the most bases, 435; batted in the most runs, 172, and trailed only Marvin Olson, of Buffalo, in the number of passes. Olson was free ticketed to first base 96 times, Puccinelli 80. I-M Sports Interfraternity and independent teams entered in the intramural bas- ketball, bowling and ice hockey leagues will start the I-M winter sport season this week with practice games which have been arranged between the different contestants. League play is scheduled to begin next week and continue on through the winter months. Fifty-two squads have entered the interfraternity class A basketball loop and will attempt to wrest the crown from Alpha Omega, last year's win- ner. The winners in the 13 leagues will meet in the play-offs to deter- mine the ultimate victor. Beta Theta Pi will find 27 other teams blocking the way to another class B championship. 17 . b' r Michigan (40) fg ft E. Townsend, f ..5 1 Evans,f......1 0 .
