Yost, its most ardent sup- porter. The smart defensive game which is so typical of good, bad, or indiffcernt Wolverine grid teams; the cautious, safe, but always-quick- -to-seize-a-break type of game thatj has made Michigan peculiar in theI football world is present in every respect in the kind of game which Coach Eddie Lowrey, Varsity hockey coach, teaches his teams. The first rule of Michigan puck- sters is to "cover up" on defense. When the going gets tough the for- ward line fades back to its own red line and as the opposing forwards sweep down the ice, each defensive wing takes a man. This leaves the center and two defensive men to cover whomever is left. With the wings forced to the boards and the center and a possible attacking defenseman covered effectively by the three re- maining Wolverines, the goalie is given the utmost in protection. On the other hand, the system has ob- vious disadvantages. Just as Mich- igan football teams dio not try for a1 yard on fourth down or pass on their own 10-yard line, Michigan hockey teams do not break three men abreast every time they get the puck, nor do they carry the play to their opponents red line and the latter catches the Wolverine forwards flat footed as he breaks down the ice with only the de- fense to beat.
