six THE MI C HIA N D A ILYw THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1935 New Member Attractive Evening Dress For Formal Wear Appointed To Fill__Vacancy Judiciary Council Picks Miller To Take Place Of Miss Rightmire Ella Miller, '36, has been appoint- ed the senior member of the Judiciary Council, Winifred Bell, head of the organization, announced late last night. Miss Miller will replace Bet- tina Rightmire, '36, who did not re- turn to school this fall. The appointment was made Tues- day after 11 applicants had been in- tervieed and considered by the pres- ent Council. The announcement was made after Miss Alice B. Lloyd, dean of women, had approved the Council's appointment. Assembly Member Miss Miller lives in Jordan Hall, and is an active member of the As- sembly. She is in the College of Lit- erature, Science, and the Arts, and an independent woman on the camp- us. At the same meeting the Judiciary Council, with the approval of the dean of women, voted to change the rules governing cases which will be brought before them in the future. The new rule reads: "All women, in attendance at the University of Mich- igan, who have returned to their place of residence after the stipulated clos- ing hour for any night shall be dis- 4iplined in accordance with the rules of their residence, except that after the fifth lateness, they are to appear before the Judiciary Council for dis- ciplinary action." Another change reads: "The atten- tion of the Judiciary Council must be called to any lateness of thirty min- u~tes or more, subsequent action to be taken at the discretion of the Council." Violations To Be Reported , This new ruling differs from the old one in that previously it was not necessary for any woman to appear before bhe Council until she had in- curred seven latenesses. Another addition is the necessity of calling the Council's attention to any excessive lateness. Miss Bell stated that these modi- fications were made for two pur- poses. Namely "to strengthen the bond between the governing bodies of the approved University residences and the Judiciary Council as well as introducing the necessary flexibility in the treatment of the more serious latenesses." These changes are to go into effect immediately. It will be necessary for each dormitory, sorority, and league house on the campus to cooperate with the Council by reporting viola- tions occuring in their own houses. By JEAN NASH There is a compact for every mood. If you would like something of a sporty nature, there are some very clever wooden models. But perhaps you prefer one of the gay jewel-color enameled ones; or something even more dainty, such as a tiny exquisite- ly-rought evening vanity case. De- spite the variety of colors and designs appearing this year, there are definite trends in vogue. The square or ob- long type is definitely the most popu- lar. For sports, there are several styles. First, there is the wooden compact, either of maple or cedar, on which your initials may be burned or carved. This model, although very new and as yet rather unattainable, promises to be the season's favorite. Square Case Is New Another design which is ideal to carry with campus clothes, and defi- nitely fashioned with an eye to "local color, is square, enameled bright blue, and banded with gold. It contains both powder and rouge and a large steel mirror and may be had with the Michigan seal. Another square enamel case - this one in red - boast three silver and white stripes, and is popular in both the double and triple varieties. One of the most unique compacts we have seen this season departing from the square daytime type, is small and round, of expert workman- ship, in gold or silver filagree. 'Tiny enough to fit into the corner of the daintiest evening bag, it still pro- vides for loose powder and rouge. Matched Sets Popular If a smart cigarette case is one of your major enthusiasms, you will surely covet a model we saw recently. Shown in numerous color combina- tions, it combines in a flat square case lighter, compact, and a slide for cig- arettes. Also popular this season are the matched sets, including identical i.- compacts and cigarette cases, dec- orated with carvings of semi-precious stones. One particularly outstanding design is a cream case outlined with gold and mounted with a jade me- dallion. The most sophisticated case we have yet seen is named "The Nor- mandy." Flat and oblong, it con- tains a double compact and cigarette compartment. Sounding a keynote of simplicity in its design, it is of white enamel with gold. delicately engraved CANDY BOOTH COMMITTEE There will be a meeting of all per- sons connected with the candy booth in University Hall at 3 p.m. today in the Undergraduate office of the League. Miss Saurborn To Study Dance Work Officials of the University High School have received notification of the appointment of Miss Jeannette Saurborn, a member of the high school staff since 1930, to the chair- manship of a committee of the Amer- ican Physical Education Association.
