A long line of former champions and finalists head the list of entries in the state tourney. Joe Griffin, national singles champion in 1928, who is staging a come-back this year after a- period of retirement, leads the parade of champions. Grif- fin defeated Al Schaufelberger, who paired with Bill Kamman to win the national doubles championship in 1927, for the Detroit metropolitan title. Schaufelberger himself was runner-up for the national title sev- eral years ago. Joe Bathey, perennial city champ- ion in Detroit, and a holder of state and national A.A.U. crowns at one time or another is ranked high in the present tournament. Louis Zerbo, the defending state A.A.U. title holder, is conceded a chance of retaining his champion- ship despite the unusually high num- bers of ranking players entered. Other prominent players will in- clude Chet York, George McCarthy, and Dworman, joint holder of the national doubles title with Bill Kam- man. The preliminary matches and all matches except the finals will take place at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. The finals will be played at 3 p.m. All matches will be played in the Intra- mural handball courts. - - - - "HE following letter was received the vision of those at the sea from a student who prefaced his trol in the athletic office to remarks with the statement: "You i that change in any organi printed the newspaper angle on the essential to its salutary well- present basketball wrangle, now how If we can't find the man1 about giving the studentsa chance and need among our many g to voice their sentiments?" athletes it would not be an un We shall be glad to print any com- able sin to import a man tc munications of reasonable length on through the morass of the this matter as long as the writer signs basketball depression who his name. Cunningham pulling away from his pursuers with a spectacular clos- ing sprint, broke the tape 25 yards it front of Venzke in the brilliant time of 4:09.3, a new record for the event but still short of the University of Kansas star's own indoor record of 4:08.4.
