THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1935 Fashionables IgnoreColdWeather To Follow Spring Signs Suit Time Begins; Trimming Takes Important Place Three-Quarter Length Coat To Be In Favor; Town Outfits Not Tailored Short Jackets Are Smart For Sports Tweed Keeps First Place For Hard Wear; Green With Blfde Is Popular By FLORENCE DAVIES There are all sorts of exciting new spring suits for the co-ed to choose from this season and to judge from the weather, it is time to begin. As to style in suits, relatively few col- ors are being worn. About seventy \er cent of them will be navy blue again, and among the rest will be found various other shades of blue, gray, tan, green, and brown and tan combinations. The dressy suit may have a short or a three-quarter length coat, but the latter are said to be the more popular, because they can be worn very nicely with other dresses. A large per cent of the suits of this type, whether with the long or short coat, are trimmed with fur, mainly with fox, but some have a severely plain neckline. Still others are trimmed with large stitched lapels of taffeta. Split skirts are still being featured. Dainty Touch on Suits Ilustrative of this type of suit is a tailored model, having a tight fit- ting black worsted jacket and skirt in Oxford stripes. A distinctive touch is provided by a crisp organdie ruche and white flower in the button hole. The new wool jacquette frock in, perhaps, a navy blue, is very smart when set off by a white pique ascot printed in a lighter tone and but- ted to the front. Here is something new in the way ot a suit, a Russian peasant coat tat looks like a dress, buttoning from hem to tiny turn-over collar exactly like a shirt frock. It is of imported diamond weave worsted made from Australian yarns. The new subtle shades of spring are inspiring -women to be original this season. Among them is the Ro- mano blue, which is set off to ad- vantage when worn with a long waisted white blouse caught in by a belt. In this case the suit coat should be of a three-quarter length. Reflective of a well-bred simplicity the Trutan beige makes an exqui- site color for a long coat trimmed in red fox. Violet Wool Smart Equally smart and very new is a wool violet tweed tailored suit, hav- ing a short high-buttoned dandy's jacket and slightly flaring skirt. The blouse is of a parma violet silk and is ingeniously matched by a nosegay of the shade worn at the collar. The semi-sport or dressy sport type of suit features short jackets. Here, for example, is one of the new tidy tailleurs of soft imported woolen material. The skirt is made to button all the way up the front and fits the figure to exactness. The button motif is also carried out on the chic little suit coat, which is set off by a neat collar of white pique. The typical town suit should be soft and not too tailored. A rough wool is the correct material and may be dressed up cr down according to the choice of blouse. For the hard wear suit a tweed is the thing. A clever feature this year is a two-skirt suit, one skirt matching the dark brown jacket and the other a brown and tan combina- tion, usually in the form of a large check. Many sport suits are three piece, predominating color combina- tions being green with blues, beige with brown and green, or all brown. CH1I OMEGA In recent elections Chi Omega sor- ority chose Sally Browne, '36, rush- ing chairman, Helen Haxton, '36, as- -sistant rushing chairman, Billie Faulkner, '37, assistant rushing chair- man, and Jean Snyder, '36, chapter correspondent. Swagger Sport Suit V - / . ' Sport Dresses Are Ideal For Campus Wear Knit Suits Combine Art And Utility In Models For Warm Weather It's all very well to spend hours discussing glamorous new formals or striking spring wraps but everyone knows that at this season of the year such gorgeous garments are all but forgotten in favor of the simple sport dress. In the spring it's the girl who looks alluring in out-of- doors attire who really ratas, an;d ony the one who is still attractive with her hair all rumpled and her nose slightly sunburned who knows real peace of mind. For many seasons fashion has been doing her best to combine art and utility in the perfect sport costume and this year she seems to have at- tained her goal in the knitted dress. This is the ideal outfit for daytime, because it is suitable for every activ- ity from golfing to tea dancing, not to forget that unimportant side-line of attending classes. Knit-Wear For Spring And lest the word knit still hold some of its old connotation which conjures up visions of a heavy, fuzzy woolen garment, may we hasten to add that the new knit goods is as light and spring-like as most of the silks or cottons which are shown. The loose weave which is used in most of these frocks is responsible in part fcr their summery appearance, but the yarn itself differs radically from the heavy wool with which grandmother used to knit her afghan. Caronne, a silk yarn with a thread of wool in it is one of the most pop- ular and the familiar chenille is also good. Simplicity To Be Quality Of Ne By BETTY GRIFFITH Simplicity is the outstanding qual- ity of the newer gloves. Whether they are to be worn for sport, for street, or for evening, they are alike in their plainness. The familiar and usually very pop- ular buckskins are being overshad- owed by many less familiar materials. Pigskin, chamois, doeskin, bengaline, 1 .". a nd string c u t . gloves are heading the fashions in the glove world. .id- skins are still good, however, and will be worn by those who enjoy being conservative. Pigskin and chamois are being- shown almost exclusively for sport and campus wear. The pigskins are available both in white and natural shades, the latter loking especially striking when worn with brown, and the white proving an excellent con- trast when paired with navy blue. One popular style is shown in natural, pigskin laced up the side in a con- trasting shade of brown. Another in chamois is a pull-on with a strap at I the back of the wrist to pull it snug. For a smart sports outfit one could do no better than to have a match- Outstanding, w Spring Gloves ing hat, shoes, gloves and purse of chamois. The two-way-stretch silk corded bengaline is by far the newest and most popular of the glove materials for general wear. These gloves are smartest in navy blue. The bengalines are mostly of very simple design, but anyone liking more elaborate styles will be pleased by those trimmed with c u ff s of taffeta ruffles o r corded material. One pair recently featured in one of the leading fashion magazines has a very plain cuff edged by a tiny band of white. An- other clever pair which can be purchased is made with a lace-like crocheted cuff. String cut gloves in all light colors are also good for everyday wear. White doe skins are featured for evening. They are practical as well as very smart looking for they can be washed easily. Very plain, they are made to reach the mid forearm. Three button kidskins of navy and gray with a very little white stitch- ing are also good for evening wear. Spring's New f Sweaters Are Gay,_Original Practical And Attractive Linens Are Predominant In Cooler Weather For the 1935 spring sweaters, manu- facturers have concocted more gay colors and more original designs than ever before. The sweaters are soft and the blouses crisp, and both are lovely. In the line of blouses, linens are predominant right now, and later, as the weather becomes warmer, dim- ities, organdies and tissue ginghams will be the favorites. But if you're looking for something to rejuvenate your winter suit, the shops are full of piques, linens and seersuckers. Linen Practical Now The linen ones are now made so that they are practical as well as attractive. The days of rapid wrink- ling linens are fading into the past. Some of the linens and pique blouses are trimmed with literally dozens of buttons, big cloth-covered ones or small pearl ones. Somehow a demure touch has crept into these tailored blouses whic his just what they need freshness. If you are looking more dressy than the for something ordinary street blouse, there are taffetas, si1k crepes, and prints' that breathe femininity at every s e a m. The sweat- ers are as variegated as t h e blouses. They are so soft that one touch of their lacy sleeves or r abbits-h a i r to keep them from being to austere and business-like. Or if you prefer to have a business-like attitude ex- pressed in your clothes, try some of the shirt-waists of cotton, and prints. One piquant seersucker is blue plaid with large white pique reveres. It is nice to wear on rainy spring days because dampness will not wilt its I I trimming will convince you of their allure. Salmon pink, turquoise blue, Holland yellow and aqua-green are some of the lovely tints, while white remains tie perennial favorite. The knits are so different. One sweater originally designed fr Saks Fifth Avenue, is vertically ribbed and is just the thing for the girl who yearns to be the slender, willowy type. MARTHA COOK . An especial dinner was held at Martha Cook last night honoring about 30 residents whose birthdaysk occur during holidays and vacation1 periods. Each woman honored re- ceived an individual cake and candle. Coral sweet peas and roses and ivory tapers were used on the dining tables. Coffee was served in the Blue Room afterwards. Margaret Bartley, '36, and Margaret Van Vleck, '36, were in charge of arrangements. I Patent Leather Purses One can scarcely think of gloves without thinking also of a purse. Patent leather is one of the newest and the smartest of purse materials for this spring. To be - extremely chic one could not do better than to select one of rich brown or navy blue. Either an envelope type with one of the new slit corner openings which are so popular or a pouch style trimmed with a contrasting rough leather will be a worthwhile addition to anyone's accessories. Sport Designs Favored Fo r New Jewelry It will be almost impossible for anyone to conceal her favorite sport this spring, because the new cruise jewelry which is so very popular for sports wear appears in the form of anchors, golfsticks, paddles, and ten- nis racquets. The former shapes are shown mostly in clips and pins. Life saver bracelets and clips are also very popular. Shown in navy blue, red, and white, they add distinction to any sports costume. There are all kinds of fascinating jewelry for evening. Gold still sur- passes every other shade, but all types of blue, especially turquoise, and yellow are very good too. The general appearance of the pieces is very heavy. The surprising thing about it is that most of this jewelry is in reality, very light. Dress clips, bracelets, and earrings are among the most popular articles of jewelry. There are an indefinite number of styles from which toI choose. The diamond clasp which decorates your bracelet may, when you take it off, prove to be a clip. One smart bracelet shown is of gold set with pearls. Another of black enam- Luscious Shades One of the most intriguing things about the knit frocks is the variety of luscious shades in which they are shown. Even the names are intrigu- ing, including as they do such titles as coppertint, berry rose, medieval blue, and sun orange. The neck treatment here is impor- tant as it is in everything this spring. Necklines are consistently high and are trimmed with cord tassel ties or with jabots. In addition to the knitted sports frock, sheer flannels in two-piece styles and pastel shades are very important. They are extremely tail- ored, made with the pinch-back and often buttoned down the front. Large wooden buttons are the most pop- ular trim, as well as pipings or lacings. These fashions of course are in addition to the ever-popular sweater and skirt, than which there is noth- ing better for spring sports wear. But however good they are it's nice to inject a little variety into the wardrobe with a knit or flannel which is a more all-around costume as well as having a bit more of that feminine touch. eled metal doesn't quite meet around the wrist. Among the earrings being shown, those which clip to the ear predom- inate. Gold leaf designs in all sizes and of all kinds prove to be very good. One pair seen were made up of three pendants extending down with tiny leaf designs at their tips. One of the best looking of the clips to be had is of gold shaped triangularly and covered with bril- liants.
