Continue Investigation Of Hotel Kerns Fire LANSING, Dec. 14 -(R)- Authori- ties today sketched in obscure de- tails of the fire that turned ill- fated-Hotel' Kerns into a hostelry of terror, found confirmation that the' list of dead numbered 30, uncovered evidence that they said indicated negligence, and took steps to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy. A carelessly discarded cigarette,' Welch said, probably started the flames which first were noticed in the suite occupied by David Monroe, hotel manager, who was one of the victims, and his brother, Douglas. One more heap of charred bones was found today in the ruins, bringing! to 15 the number of bodies found there, and to 28 the number of record- ed dead. Thirteen guests died of in- juries or drowned, when they leaped to the street or into the Grand River at the rear of the hotel. Two are definitely missing and listed as dead. Two of the most recently recovered bodies were identified definitely, one as that of Mrs. Elsa Robbins, of Saginaw, Mich., matron of the state capitol, and the other as that of J. H Byrnes, Grand Rapids, Mich., shoe salesman. Nine of the fire dead still are unidentified. Claims Radicalism Is 'Inclination Of Youth' NEW YORK, Dec. 14-(A')--Dis- contented college students who find no place for themselves in the world will be the recruits of either com- munism or fascism, John Stewart Bryan, president of the College of William and Mary, warned the asso- ciation of Life Insurance Presidents today. Bryan, who is also publisher of the Richmond, Va., New Leader, said that aside from disgruntled colleg- ians, "our young people are meeting magnificently the dark challenge of our time." Asserting that radicalism was "the inclination of youth," Bryan con- tinued: "What is to happen if these young men and women of extreme opinion get out into the world and find them- selves unrewarded for their labor and expenditures in college, unwanted in industry, and unequally compensated in comparison with the trade unionist who has been protected by Section 7-a and by the other provisions of the NRA?" DuPonts Fight Charge j Of Exorbitant Profits WASHINGTON, Dec. 14. - (P)- Testimony that the government failed to audit properly the- accounts by which the Delaware Du Ponts dis- putedly made a profit of $1,961,O00 at no financial risk to themselves was presented today to the Senate com- mittee. Arthur C. Carnduff, former special attorney in the Justice Department, asserted that he was removed from the case in1923 by Attorney-General Dougherty at a time when he was convinced the company owed the government at least $900,000, and pos- sibly more. Members of the Du Pont family im- mediately and emphatically chal- lenged these assertions. They termed "ridiculous" a statement that the "profits" figure represented a $39, 231 per cent return in investment and contended that after deducting taxes and other outlays the figure dwindled to $286,346. Italo-Ethiopian Friction Brought Before League GENEVA, Dec. 14. - (PA) - A new sore on the world's political face - the friction between Italy and Ethi- opia in Africa - was called to the attention of the League council this evening. The government of Emperor Haile Selassie I at Addis Ababa telegraphed the Council to give the African pow- er's version of recent border clashes in which both Italian and Abyssin- ian forces suffered casualties and to say: "In the presence of the aggression of Italians, the Abyssinian govern- ment calls the attention of the Coun- cil to the gravity of the situation."
