Wins In Romp With Berwanger, Bartlett Out; Gophers, Purdue Win EVANSTON, Ill., Nov. 10 --(p)- An inspired band of Northwestern Uni- versity Wildcats threw a scare into Illinois' undefeated eleven here this afternoon, but the Illini were able to put on sufficient pressure in the last two periods to gain a 14 to 3 victory over Dick Hanley's boys. The Wildcats led at half time, 3 to 0, by virtue of a field goal by Chambers scored midway in the open- ing period. The Northwestern score came as a result of a drive which started on the Illinois 38-yard line but was checked by the Zuppkemen on their own 10-yard stripe. On the' final down, the husky Wildcat line- man made successful his attempt. Throughout the first half the I Northwestern team employed a 5-3- 2-1 defense which succeeded in stop- ping the wide open style of play em-: ployed by the Illini. In the third and fourth periods, however, the Illini teamwas able to solve the Northwest- ern defense and scored seven points in each. BUCKEYES SWAMP CHICAGO COLUMBUS, O., Nov. 10 -(-P -- Scoring four out of their five touch- downs through passes, the powerful Ohio State Buckeyes swamped Chi- cago, 33 to 0, here today. Both Jay Berwanger, the Maroons' great halfback, and Ned Bartlett, his flashy running mate, were kept out of the game by injuries, and the Chi- cago attack made little headway against the strong Ohio State defense. A lateral pass, Dye to Buswick, gave the Buckeyes their first touch- down early in the game. A forward lateral gave them another touch- down in the first period. The play was Dye to Buswick to Wetzel. After piling up this comfortable lead, Ohio State coasted on to three more touchdowns and an easy victory. The stubborn Iowans put up a surprising defense, however, making several successful goal line stands against the driving Boilermaker at- tacks led by Duane Purvis and Jim Carter. MINNESOTA 30, INDIANA 0 MEMORIAL STADIUM, MINNE- APOLIS, Nov. 10 - (P) -Minnesota crashed through for its third Con- ference victory today, defeating In- diana's fighting Hoosier band 30 to 0, in its quest for an untied and un- defeated season. Minnesota rushed over two touch- downs in the first period, but slowed up after that, adding a safety in the second quarter and a lone touch- down in each of the last two periods. Indiana failed to threaten through- out the game. Fighting Middies Win From Notre Dame, 10-6 CLEVELAND, Nov. 10. - Navy. fighting off challenge after challenge from Notre Dame's Ramblers, kicked a field goal and, in the final minutes of play, scored a touchdown to defeat the Irish, 10 to 6, before a crowd of 60,000 today. A touchdown pass, Borries to Dor-' nin, gave Navy a 10 to 0 lead near the end of the game, and a 90-yard Notre Dame drive in two plays for a touch- down was futile. RMISTICE November I th IN FLANDERS FIELDS..... LEST WE FORGET.... ) Patanelli, Savage, And Ford Injuries Slight Injuries to Mike Savage, Matt Patanelli, and Jerry Ford, suffered in the Wisconsin game yesterday, were all minor. A severe blow on the head knocked Mike Savage out for a few moments, but he was able to walk off the field. A blow on the neck in the second half stunned Jerry Ford, but after a rest he was able tp return to the game. It is expected that all three will be in condition for next Saturday's game with Ohio State University.
