Lecture
University Lecture: Professor Rod-.
erick D. McKenzie, chairman of the
Department of Sociology, will speak
on the subject, "The Territorial Or-
ganization of Society," on Thursday,
March 1, at 4:15 p. m., in Natural
Science Auditorium.
This is the sixth of a series of
University lectures by members of the
University of Michigan faculty. The
public is cordially invited.
Exhibition
Architectural Building Exhibition:
A collection showing Plant Forms in
Ornament circulated by The Amer-
ican Federation of Arts is now on
exhibition in the ground floor corri-
dor of the Architecture Building,
open daily excepting Sundays from
9 to 6. The exhibition will continue
through February 26. The public is
cordially invited.
Events Today
Comedy Club Tryouts: Last prelim-
inary tryouts for this semester will be
held this afternoon in the Laboratory
Theatre at 4:00. Any student on the
campus, except a first semester fresh-
man, is eligible to compete in the
trials. There will be no further try-
outs this spring.
Gondoliers: Usual meeting for en-
tire class this afternoon at 2:00
o'clock in the Laboratory Theatre.
Chorus and individual rehearsals
from 1:00 o'clock through 6:00
o'clock, and in the evening. Tryouts
for individual parts during these
same hours.
New enrollments will be accepted
until the end of this week.

Paleonto-ogical Journal Club will
meet in room 1532 University Mu-
seums, Friday, February 23, at 5
p. m. All those interested in a dis-
cussion of paleontological problems
and a review of recent paleontolog-
ical literature will be welcome.
Sigma Xi meeting will be held
Tuesday, February 27, in the large
lecture room of the Chemistry and
Pharmacy Building, at 7:30 p. m.
Professors M. Gomberg and H. B.
Lewis will speak briefly on the de-
velopment of Chemistry and Phar-
macy at the University of Michigan.
The Gallery Talk to be given by
Prof. Jean Paul Slusser in Alumni

No attempts at high speed are
being made on the present tour, and
although sustained speeds of 110
miles an hour are claimed for the
train, it will not run over about 50'
miles an hour on the trip here.
The train is composed of three
cars, joined on articulated trucks
and with closed vestibules, forming
practically a single unit. The whole
is about 201 feet in length, but it
weighs only about 85 tons as com-
pared with the 1,000 tons of a con-
ventional 10-car steam train.
The main power plant of the train
it a distillate-burning, internal com-
bustion engine directly connected to
a generator supplying electricity to
two motors mounted on the forward
truck of the first car. An engine-
driven auxiliary generator supplies
current for battery charging, for one
of the two air compressors, for the
dir-conditioning apparatus, for the
lighting equipment, and for refrig-
eration in the buffet.
The engineer sits in an elevated
cab above the rounded nose of the
car, the cab being separated from
the main engine room by a metal
who wishes to attend is also invited.
There will be a charge of fifty cents
per couple which will be collected
at the door.

In the first coach, back of the
power room, is first the railway post
office department and then the bag-
gage compartment. The second and
third coaches are devoted to passen-
gers, with a butet in the extreme
rear end.

Throughout its iength the train is
air-conditioned cud equipped with
indirect lihting. Individual seat;S
are designed to recline in four po-
sitions, and the serving of meals and
lunches is made convenient by spe-
cial arrangements. Space is pro-
vided beneath the seats for luggage,
The train does not have any sleep-
ing accommodations, but a second
train of six cars, following the same
design, has already been ordered by
the Union Pacific. Plans are to use
the first train on special runs be-
tween the larger ciiis on the system
until its praeticbiityl for regular
main line through passenger service
is fully established.
Federal Camp Projects
To Be Subject Of Allen
Prof. Shirley W. Allen of the for-
estry school is to speak on "Federal
Projects in Camping and Outdoor
Recreation" at a meeting in the se-
ries on "Problems of Great Counsel-
ors" at 9 a. m., Saturday, in Room
2432 of the University lementary
School.
Professor Allen's talk will be the
second of two to be given at that
time. The other speaker will be Prof.
Paul B. Samson of Michigan State
Normal College, former director o,
the Chicago Boy Scouts' Camp and
of the *Toledo Boy Scouts' Camp. His
subject will be "Camp Sanitation."
The talks are open to the general
public.

Stras Bride
ST. IGNACE, Feb. 21.-(-P)-Sur-
veyors for the United States geodetic
survey today were gathering data
preparatory to the drawing of a con-
tour map of the proposed Straits of
Mackinac bridge.
When the work here is completed
in an estimated three weeks, the sur-
veyors will move to a point five miles
east of Cheboygan in the lower pen-
insula, proposed southern terminal
for the span.
C. E. Fowler, Detroit bridge de-
signer, has projected plans to build
the bridge at a cost of $30,000,000
across the southl channel largely on a
causeway to Dois Blanc Island, thence
to Round Island, then Mackinac
Island, continuing to a point south
of St. IgaL.
The spans in the projected design
are of arched cantilever type, with a
main span of 1,300 feet and end
spans of 600 feet. The bridge would
be 25 miles in length, and would re-
quire an estimated five years to build.
The bride would carry two rail-
ioad tas and a double automobile
lane, according to the plans. Fowler
has advanced figures indicating his
belief that the bridge would earn $3,-
000,000 annually by 1944 from fees
derived in traffic toll.

citizens will be encouraged to offer
criticism. Then will follow another
conference March 5 at which repre-
sentatives of 500 industries will
gather to voice their ideas about
NRA.
The whole idea, Johnson told a
nation-wideaudience Tuesday night,

"Any fair-minded citic presenting
facts rather than conjecture - any
earnest complainant - any man with
a constructive suggestion - should
speak at this critical hour," Johnson

But he lashed at "professional crit-

icism" which he said has often "de-
generated into scurrilous and per-
sonal appraisenientf" of oflicials.
He acknowledged that in sonic
codes "there are many discrepancies,
mistakes, and outright blunders to be
corrected." He contended, however,
that the "important thig is that
3,000,000 people have been put to
work, that $3,000,000.000 has been
added to their purchasing power"
Criticism is to be expected, he said,
when an organization has a iple
duty which he outlined thus:
"It is to see that industry does not
hornswoggle labor; that labor does
not bullyrag industry; that neither,
separately, nor both in concert, shall
exploit the consuming public."
As one step in the new campaign,
the NRA has enlisted again thou-
sands of committeemen who waged
the Blue Eagle campaign in every city
last August. Their new task is to
focus local criticism of suggestions
on the administration.
The meetings here ai'e designed
to chart the final course for the NRA.
Johnson described Tuesday night's
address, which went to a country-
wide radio audience, as the most un-
portant from the NRA since the Blue
Eagle drive.
