Curtis Tells Of Glass Pouring
For University's Giant Telescope
By LLOYD S. REICH
Twenty-three ladles of molten glass
were poured into a mold, completing
the pouring process in the manufac-
ture of the 85-inch mirror for the
University telescope which is to be
the third largest in the world, ac-j
cording to Prof. Heber D. Curtis, di-j
rector of the University Observatory,
who witnessed the process Tuesday
at the Corning Glass Works, Corning,
N. Y.'
Included in the group of astrono-
mers who made the trip to watch the
pouring are Dr. R. M. Petrie, mem-
ber of the observatory staff, and
Francis C. McMath and William
Kales, of Detroit.
The party witnessed the pouring
in the "blowing room," according to
Professor Curtis, where there was a
great glass furnace tank, which con-
tained about 70 tons of liquid pyrex,
and a mold, which with its white fire-
brick and hemispherical roof, resem-
bled an Eskimo igloo.
"The workers inserted a great ladle
into the furnace, and dipped up about
500 pounds of the hot pyrex. This
stuff is really hot, being at a tem-
perature of 1,600 degrees Centigrade,
or about 2,900 degrees on our ordinary
Fahrenheit scale," Professor Curtis
said.
The molten glass is then taken by
the ladle and poured into the mold.
