RCH 18, 1934 TH MHG A N DA IL Y Chairmen For Pe ny Car ival Are Annoned Naie April21 As Date Of An nual W.AA. Project.; Hous~es Choose Booths Chairmen for the annual Penny Carnival to be held April 21, have been announced by the general chair- man, Marie Metzger, '35. Florence', Shaw will act as chairman of the booth committee; and Levinia Ceighton, '35, chairman of the fi- mnne committee. other chairmen chosen are Sue Thomas, who will be in charge of decorations, Peg Cowie, '35, in charge of entertainment; Lucille Betz, '35, chairman of the floor committee; and Eleanor Blum, 35, chairman of pub- licity. At a meeting of the representatives from the various houses, booths were discussed. A variety of projects, have as usual been suggested. Booths sell- ing popcorn, frost bites, carmel corn, candied apples, and soft drinks have all been spoken for. Entertainment will consist of shooting galleries, for- tune teling, probably a golf course, and other carnival offerings. Each dormitory and sorority on campus will have some form of booth which they will work out themselves. Dancing will be permitted in the Waterman Gymnasium, to allow plenty of room. Last year the Sarah Caswell Angell H'all was found to e too small to accommodate the num- ber that wanted to dance. The Carnival has been for several years presented in the form in which it is now given. Years ago, however, W.,A.A., which sponsored the project, combined with members of the Soph- omore class or the "Sophomore Ci- cus" to present a bazarre. The Carnival this year is being pr-I se ted on the week-end after Spring Vacation so that there will be "some - thing to do for everyone on that week-end," according to Miss Mez- ger. Last Rehearsals Will Determine Gon doliei Cast Final decisions for the cast of "The Gondoliers," Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, will be made after rehear- sals to be held this afternoon and tonight in the Laboratory Theatre, Valentine B. Windt, director of Play Production, said yesterday. "The Gondoliers" is being produced as part of the work of the newly organized music drama class given jointly by Play Production and the School of Music. Those wishing to be considered for parts in this final decision must be at rehearsal today, Mr. Windt said. Casting is competitive, done on an impersonal basis, insofar as the hu- man limitations, of those in charge permit, so that parts are given to those who prove themselves most ably in spirit and ability to play them. H-owever, the :parts ,of lesser magni- tude are given just as much atten- tion as those greater in importance, as shown by the recent presentation of "Elizabeth, the Queen," in which the characters of Penelope, Bacon, the fool, and others, are as essential to the development of the play as an ensemble as is the character of Eliza- beth, Mr. Windt said. Before all else, in acting, it is necessary to surrender the ego, Mr. Windt said, as the ego is in violent opposition to everything that is a- tistic.
