THE MICHIGAN DAILY checked by pressing on the same spot on the uninjured thumb. Quite often there have been cases in which a student has applied for treatment for a hand injury, bring- ing a history of having injured it the same way.before. An X-ray will often show that there is an old un- unified fracture. There are occasionally cases that have very little trouble even when the fracture is united. But with oc- casional small hurts, the wrist grows a little more sensitive all the time until often the bone has to be re- moved. The treatment is not wholly sat- isfactory even with the best of treat- ment, and sometimes the bones fail to unite. In fact when they were less often observed it was said that they never united. It has however been demonstrated that with proper treatment most of them do unite and that it is possible to get bony as well as fibrous union. The treatment for this fracture is tiresome, the hand and wrist having to be put in a cast from eight to 12 weeks, whereas union in the other bones of this extremity should be ac- complished in three or four weeks. The longer time is valuable, however, from the standpoint of added pro- tection and support during and af- ter healing.
