FRIDAY, OCT. 6,1933 THE MICHIGAN DAILY CAMPUS SOCiETY Senior Women Honored With Scholarships Michigan Alumnae Award Prizes For Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Winners of the scholarships award- ed by the Michigan Alumnae Council to senior women have been an- nounced. Marian Giddings, '34; who has achieved 283 honor points out of a possible 285, led candidates in scho- lastic achievement. Ruth Duhme, '34, followed with 266 honor points. Bar- bara Andrews,.'34, was awarded third place with 256 honor points. Dean Alice Lloyd, who has assisted the Michigan alumnae in their proj- ect, stated that the three highest rec- ords had been selected from many excellent applications. These schol- arships of $100 each were awarded' on a purely scholastic basis, each' applicant having a B average or better. Fraternity Will Entertain With Formal Dance Sigma Nu fraternity will open the fall social season tonight with the first formal dance of the year, to be given in the chapter house on Ox- ford Road. The affair will be in the1 form of a dinner dance honoring the Eunomian Society of Michigan State College, who will be house guests for the week end.' Arrangements are being made for 60 couples. Patrons and patronesses will include: Dr. and Mrs. Lowell G.' Carr, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Dunn, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Oakes, all of Ann Arbor. The motif of the affair, which1 will be carried throughout the exten- sive decorations, will stress the ap- proaching installation of Eunomian as a Sigma Nu chapter. A buffet sup- per will be served on the balconies of the ball-room and in the garden during the earlier part of the evening. Music will be furnished by Johnny Harbard's orchestra from Detroit, augmented by entertainers. Guests of the local Michigan State chapter will include the Misses Dor- othy C. Hammersley, Joy Stewart, Elizabeth Rowe, Ruth Robinson, Vir- ginia Pelhank, Eleanor Anderson, Dorothy Bone, Germaine Kehrer, Jane Reynolds, Gertrude Walker, Vir- ginia Coe, Doris Enoch, and Nancy Reed. Contract Lessons Begun At League At the first of the contract bridge lessons held Wednesday night at the League, 25 bridge enthusiasts had their initial instruction. The series of eight lessons is being offered this term for $2, according to Miss Ethel McCormick, social director of the League. No single lessons will be given, ex- cept to sorority women who, on ac- count of rushing, were unable to be at the first lesson. If these women will get in touch with Miss McCor- mick she will arrange a time when they can have their first lesson so that they will not miss any of the eight lessons. The lessons are given by Mr. John Mathes, who conducted a similar series last year. Mr. Mathes is known for the honors that he won at the Culbertson bridge tournament last year. Marriage Announced By Michigan Graduates Announcement of the marriage of Mary Frances Abele, '30, of Saginaw, to James Noris Teets, '31, of San- dusky, has been made by the parents of the couple. The wedding occurred last Saturday in the rectory of the Sacred Heart Church at Saginaw. Mr. Teets is a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, while Mrs. Teets graduated from the library science division of the University. 1Voted Saxohonist And Band To Play Tonight At League Nonni Bernardi's orchestra, called ace broadcasting band of the Mich- igan Radio Network, is featured to- night at the Mayfair dance in the League ballroom open to all students and faculty members. According to the new policy of the League dance managers, several well- known and popular dance bands will be brought to Ann Arbor for the en- joyment of campus groups. Bernardi, the first of this series has been the featured saxophonist with several noted orchestras, his last engagement being with Glenn Gray's Casa Loma orchestra, Columbia network favo- rites. He will bring with him petite Eve- lyn Garvin, well known to radio fans for her work on both Columbia and NBC networks with Joe Reichmann's orchestra from St. Louis. Pretty Miss Garvin is also a veteran of several theatrical appearances throughout the country at Fox and Publix houses. Annual Conference Of Michigan Women Opens The twelfth annual conference of the Michigan state division of Amer- ican Association of University Wom- en began yesterday at Jackson to continue through Saturday. Mrs. W. D. Henderson is state president and Mrs. F. B. Fisher is state secretary while a number of University faculty members are to speak at the conven- tion. The principle address will be given by Dr. Meta. Glass,. national presi- dent of A. A. U. W. Dr. Arthur B. Moehlman and Prof. Preston W. Slos- son, both of the University, will give addresses.
