STHE MICHIGAN DAILY Favors Farm Program Stanton Talks On Russia Over Radio Program $100,000,000 In Trade Will BenefiL America As Result Of Recognition Trade resulting from our recog- nition of Russia will probably amount to over $100,000,000 during 1934, John W. Stanton of the history department stated in a discussion of "The Russia We Recognized" during the Michigan program over the Uni- versity radio hour last night. Russia and the United States have always been on friendly terms ex- cept during the period following the war, Mr. Stanton said, pointing out the influence of Russia in keeping European nations from interfering during our Civil War, and also the purchase of Alaska by the United States from Russia. The recognition policy inaugurated by President Roosevelt will have a great influence on calming affairs in the Far East, Mr. Stanton believed. Russia fears Japan as her outstand- ing rival, and with the United States recognizing Russia, both countries will be slow to act in a hasty man- ner. Russia was caught as an agri- cultural nation during the war, and was thus at a great disadvantage in fighting with industrial nations, and she does not intend to be caught in such a predicament again, Mr. Stan- ton stated. O'Neal, president, as he opened the annual convention of the American Farm Bureau federation in Chicago. Ask Permission To Show Dr. Vaughan's Portrait Permission has been asked of Uni- versity officials by the Carnegie In- stitute at Pittsburgh to include a portrait of Dr. Victor C. Vaughan, dean of the Medical School here from 1891 to 1921, in an exhibit of the works of Gari Melchers that is be- ing planned there. The portrait hangs in Alumni Memorial Hall at present. Authorities have expressed the be- lief that this portrait represents the best one that Mr. Melchers has ever done and it is for this reason that the Carnegie Institute wishes to in- clude it in the exhibit.
