THE MICHIGAN DAILY SATUXRDAY, Noted Antartic Explorers Meet In New Zealand Cuban Situation Is Discussed By Aiton This may be the time to scrap the Monroe Doctrine and our entire past policy in relation to Pan-American affairs, Prof. Arthur S. Aiton of the history department, told a radio aud- ience over the University hour Thurs- day, in discussing "The Historical Background of the Present Situation in Cuba." "By a fine gesture in behalf of in- ter-American friendship, it will allay all fears concerning our 'so-called' imperialistic aggression in the Carib- bean," Professor Aiton stated. "The answer to the question lies in a wise, unselfish handling of the Cuban sit- uation." Professor Aiton felt it fortunate that the new Roosevelt regime wisely refrained from intervention, and through its representative, Sumner Welles, worked to secure the forma- tion of a stable government accepta- ble to the people of Cuba. The ad- ministration made two mistakes. however, which made a bad impres- sion in Hispanic America, in the na- val demonstration in Cuban waters which was interpreted as intimida- tion, and the support of the short- lived rule of de Cespedes, which was viewed as an attempt to force the government on the Cuban people. Temperance will be included in the 'study course of 500,000 Minnesota public school pupils beginning next September. Glenn Frank Asks Liquor Abstinence MADISON, Wis., Dec. 8-0P)- - President Glenn Frank of the Uni- versity of Wisconsin at a student convocation today urged that stu- dents abstain from drinking liquor until after graduation. Not until student days are over should an individual decide whether such a "minor disadvantage" as drinking is permissible, Dr. Frank said. Dr. Frank observed that prohibi- tion was repealed on the fifteenth birthday anniversary of his son, and that the coincidence caused him to "approach the personal aspects of the transition with a concern which transcends cold analysis." "Not in your lifetime," he warned the students, "will the old safeties, the old securities, the old routine be restored. You will need to have your wits about you. You will need to have your capacities under tight rein. You are headed for rigorous days. For your generation temperance be- comes not so much a matter of mor- als as a matter of survival." A concept of human life as electri- cal energy form solar radiation has been developed by Dr. George W. Crile, one of the country's outstand- ing surgeons and research physicists. -Associated Press Photo Three famous explorers, who plan to fly over the South Pole during the forthcoming Antarctic summer, are shown as they met in Dudedin, New Zealand. The mechanistic view holds that the ultimate processes of life are understandable and explain- able in the terms of science, said Dr. Case, adding that the opposite view, vitalism, holds that life is funda- mentally unknowable. The early biologists from Aristotle to Bonnet sought fur an archtype to which all organisms m:ght be related but this movement was struck its death blow by the advent of Darwin- ian evolution, said Dr. Case. The history of the search by biologists for the answer to the problem of life has been marked by the succes- sive placing of emphasis upon small- er and smaller units of the whole organism, said Dr. Case, showing how at first taxonomy was stressed, then biogeography and ecology, ltaer mor- phology, cytology, and finally, now, biochemistry. The present trend is toward a realization of the interde- pendence between all parts and a tendency to recognize the interaction between the units of the organism, said Dr. Case. . cord trim.
