Bouchard Talks To Engineers On Chinese Life Tells Members Of A.S.C.E. About Every-Day Life Of Middle-Class Asiatics ICLASSIFIED DIRECT( -pitu1 n r r r WASHINGTON, Oct. 26.-PA')A A drastic realignment of railroad f - cilities in Detroit and Michigan ,s t recommended in a report submitted to the Railroad Co-Ordinating Ad-1 ministration designed to effect econ- omies of $2,000,000 to $4,000,000. The proposals in the hands of Jo-I seph B. Eastman, the Federal rail-1 road co-ordinator include:' 1. Consolidation of the Union Station in Detroit with the Mich- 1 igan Central Station. 2. Elimination of individual ticket offices downtown in favor of a consolidated office. 3. Readjustment of schedules j that would bring to an end dupli- cation of passenger and freight , services, as operated at present. The suggestions are a part of the nation-wide plan for consolidation of transportation lines into seven or eight systems at a saving estimated at $740,000,000. The authors are Frederick H. Prince, Boston banker, and John W. Barriger, chief exam- iner of the Railroad loan section of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. W. B. Poland, of the co-ordinator's staff, has been assigned to study the plan. Eastman made it clear that he was not committed either for or against the Prince proposals. He added, how- ever, that such huge economies should not be overlooked. Regarding Union Station facilities, the report says:, "The New York Central Station is modern in every respect and has ample capacity to accommodate -all trains. While it is true that the De- troit Union Railroad & Depot Co., owned by Pennsylvania and leased- to Wabash and Pere Marquette, at. the end of 1931 had a surplus after pay- ing dividends, at the same time, under present day conditions,=ay with the New York Central Station advantageously located directly off Michigan avenue, a situation, eists wherein co-ordination would amply meet requirements of the City and a net saving of possibly $250,000 a year effected, providing favorable terms could be negotiated." The three-cornered struggle be- tween Russia, China, and Japan for the possession of the province of Manchukuo has aroused special in-i terest in the life and customs of the Far East, Prof. Harry Bouchard de- clared in a speech given last night before a student gathering of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Professor Bouchard, a member of the Geodesy and Surveying faculty, speaks with the authority of a year's stay in Tientsin, China as a faculty member of an engineering school there. He made an interesting con- trast between the everyday existence ef a middle-class Chinese and an American family of the same class. In no other country, with the possi- ble exception of the Southern section of the United States, is there so much specialization in the duties of the servant class; the cook knows no other than cocking and so on through the list of house servants, Prof. Bouchard said. There is also an unusual number of servants for every 'middle class home, he pointed out. The home- wife who loves to tidy-up the kit- chen and do the shopping would be far from happy in China, Prof. Bou- chard declared, since the kitchen is usually separated from the. house along with the servants' quarters. The Chinese servant is so versed in the art of shopping that a white woman can't possibly buy as cheaply. Life in China is as a result a great deal like that found among the Southern plantations even to this day, Prof. Bouchard concluded.. Bomb Wrecks ome Of Cuban National Head HAVANA, Oct. 26-()-An attempt was made early today on the life of Carlos Mendieta, Nationalist leader, when his home was bombed. Mrs. Mendieta narrowly escaped injury when the balcony on which she had been standing a few minutes earlier was ripped away. Mendietta said he had no idea who was respon- sible for the bombing. The explosion, which occurred about 1:30 a. in., sattered windows of his bedroom and tore away the front of his home. The bombing followed hours of wild disorders in some parts of the city. During the last two days police have arrested 400 persons in an effort to stem the trouble. Most of those arrested were communists. Outside the capital, the situation also was acute - especially in Ma- tanzas Province and at the Alto Ce- dro sugar mill in Oriente Province, where the American manager, C. M. Jervis, was held prisoner by workers, who were reported to have set up a "Soviet regime." President Grau's cabinet went to the palace prepared to resign, but the president deferred action on the res- ignations.
