Chinese Painters' Equipment Now In Museum Display Benjamin March, curator in the Division of the Orient in the Uni- versity Museum of Anthropology, has just completed arranging a display of tools used by Chinese artists, which is on exhibition on the fourth floor of the Anthropology Museum. One part of the display case is arranged as a Chinese artist would arrange his desk before starting a picture. To the artist's left there are paper weights, a letter opener, and an inlaid cover for the ink palette. In the front are displayed two vases for water used for the ink and a small pot for cleaning the brush. To the artist's right is a stick of Chinese ink, a mixture of pine-soot and glue, which is prepared for use by grinding the end of the stick in water on the ink palette. Palettes used by the Chinese are commonly made of stone or pottery, but the one on exhibition is lacquer of the Eigh- teenth Century. Also on the artist's right is a brush holder and a brush, placed beside a handsomely-carved bamboo arm rest. In another section of the case a Chinese porcelain palette is dis- played, showing the three most com- mon pigments used in drawing, writ- ing, and painting. A porcelain water bowl, used by the painter, provides both clean water and compartments for washing brushes. beside this water bowl, there is a display of pig- ments in the form in which they are sold by the merchants. Every painting has on it the seal of its artist. As a matter of fact, the seal is a definite part of the picture, according to Mr. Marsh, and for this reason he has an interesting display of seals. These seals are usually carved of stone, and a seal impres- sion is made by the painter or callig- rapher as a final authentication of his work.
