its presence is not noticeable until
the bindings begin to loosen.
Bindings Must Be Oiled
Most of the bindings are of calf's
leather, which must be oiled fre-
quently to prevent a general drying

out and subsequent darkening of the
cover. Books are kept in dust-proof
cases and are never exposed to di-
rect sunlight, Miss Chipman said.
All these precautions would be use-
less, however, if it were not for the
fact that the paper in these books
is of high grade rag composition.
Modern novels printed on cheap pulp
paper would never be able to last for
generations, which the Clements col-
lection will, librarians believe.
Prof. Robert Foure, of Columbus,
Ohio, has the original paper of Jules
Verne in which television and air-
planes were forecast.
