Louis" A Hopkins, Secretary Vulcans will meet Sunday, Oct. 9, The fight against uberculosis inji AmnerPa is showing results, evidence among students here tends to show,4 according to a recent report issued by the Health Service. College students are in the dangerj age for this disease, but though at special search has been made by the1 University Health Service for active cases during the past four years, an average of fewer than 30 active cases has been found in the student body of over 8,000. Women are affected almost twice as frequently as are men, and rates are higher among seniors and graduates, as is to be expected because of their age, the report points out. Results Seen That the anti-tuberculosis efforts of this country are getting results is further indicated by comparison of cases among foreign students, which are m u c h m o r e numerous than among native born. More active cases were found among University foreign students, especially from ori- ental countries, so that everyone is now given x-ray examination of the lungs as part of his entrance health requirements. Many of these cases are from wealthy foreign families where economic conditions are not a factor, it was found. Last year inedical students were all x-rayed and less than one-half of one per cent were found to have the disease, as compared with percent- ages as high as 2.5 reported among senior students by the University of Pennsylvania, which also reported that tuberculosis increases very rap- idly among medical students during their four years in school. Sent To Sanitoriums Active cases of the disease are usually sent to sanitoriums near their homes or treated in the new tuberculosis unit of the University Hospital, the latter course being fol- lowed, especially with some foreign students. Minor and suspected cases are followed up closely by the Health Service with diet, sleep, rest, and medical treatment, and can usually be cleared up with student co-op- eration, according to the report.
