Coaches Dick Hanley id Andy Kerr have two quarter- cks besides Newman, but popular atiment shows that Newman will the choice for the position. Coach Hanley already knows just lat Newman can do because of the to 6 defeat that he suffered from e quarterback's long right arm. Grantland Rice writes in the cur- nt Collier's, "He (Newman) was di- ctly responsible for five of Mich- in's six Conference triumphs. He livered 57 of the 83 points Mich- ,n scored against Big Ten oppo- nts. He scored all of the points chigan made in her last three big A FULL-SIZED clock with stop- watch attachment is being used to time the hockey games. This gives interested spectators a chance to keep as accurate time as the official timer himself. In Wednesday's match with West- ern Ontario, many co-eds watched the clock for the time. It runs, how- ever, only while official play is on. Time out, rests, and time between periods are not registered. As the team went into the over- time the clock said 9 p. m. and after they had finished it was 9:20. How- ever, the real time was 10:45, which, when found out annoyed the co-eds considerably. MERRY CHRISTMAS Wolverines Win From Mt. Union On Court, 36-27 Michigan's Leader Makes 15 Points In Scoring Spree, Plummer 9 Captain DeForest Eveland led his basketball team to their initial vic- tory of. the season over Mr. Union of Alliance Ohio by scoring 15 points in the 36 to 27 win. The slender Wolverine forward was hot. His shots from outside the foul- circle swished through the net and his fast dribbling that ripped the Union defense to shreds, gave him several opportunities for his favorite shot, a high running jump in front of the basket. Altenhof, Petrie Help As Eveland speeded up his play to lead the team to victory, Ray Alten- hof and Bob Petrie, Maize and Blue guards, took heart and also produced good games. It was the fast Petrie that outran the Union players, steal- ing the ball away from them as they rushed their dribbles to the Michigan basket. Altenhof responded to the challenge of Eveland and Petrie with superior play in every department. Michigan led at halftime, 14-11, after playing slow, uninteresting bas- ketball. They took the ball down to the Union defense but could not pen- etrate it for many accurate shots. Mt. Union had the ball most of the first half but they too, could not slice the defense for many points. Michigan Increases Lead Michigan worked to a 22-13 lead soon after the second half started. On one of the prettiest plays of the game, Altenhof brought the ball down the floor, hooked it to Petrie who dribbled away from the basket, passed to Michigan's captain who sank the dog shot under the basket. Michigan continued its scoring spree, bringing it to 36-20 when the reserves replaced the starters and Mt. Union made seven more points be- fore the final whistle. Box Score Michigan Gagers will travel to Kalamazoo this week-end for a game with Western State Teachers Coile-e,. the clash to be the second in a home- and-home series. Coach Cappan's team will be out to avenge an earlier defeat. Following the Saturday game, the squad will enjoy a week's vacation and Dec. 27 will report back for the start of work for the Syracuse con- test Jan. 2. Twelve men are slated to return for the holiday practice, Coach Cappon announced. They are Capt. Eveland, Altenhof, Williamson, Petrie, Plum- mer, Oliver, Black, Allen, Garner, Regeczi, Petoskey, and Teitelbaum' Morning and afternoon sessions will be held at the Field House. The team will be improved mate- rially after the holidays when Ivan Williamson returns to competition. Williamson has been kept out be- cause of the knee injury that both- ered him throughout the football season. Tip-Off Is Unimportant, According To Research1 CHICAGO, Dec. 15.--(A)---Although there are certain advantages to the team which controls the tip, its elim- ination in basketball would have little influence in the final outcome of the game, a survey of high school and college contests in Iowa, Nebraska,+ Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma in- dicates. , The survey was conducted by the college basketball coaches' association research department and the results explained in the December issue of the Athletic Journal by Coach John, W. Bunn of Stanford University. HUBER Seven new champions were crown- ed in the All-Campus wrestling tour- nament, held at the Intramural Building last night before a crowd of 700 people. Only John Spoden, in the heavy- weight division, retained his crown. Spoden outclassed Tom O'Bryon, gaining an advantage at the outset of the fight and throwing O'Bryon in 5:20, to win the match. Two Decision Matches All but two of the matches ended in falls. In the 118 pound battle Don Fiero of the varsity gained a 1:15 time advantage to defeat Palmer of the freshman team in a slow match. In the other non-fall match Sey- mour Rubin, state A.A.U. titleholder at 126 pounds, defeated Dick Martin. Rubin gained a 6:20 time advantage and was able to offset a closing rally by Martin. Austin Fiero Wins Another A.A.U. champion, Austin Fiero, won the 135 pound go, by vir- tue of a fall over Carroll Sweet in 6:52. Sweet put up a good fight but tired rapidly as the bout progressed. Louis Parker, of the varsity, an- nexed the 165 pound; crown. He threw Olmstead, a yearling in 5 min- utes. The bout was stopped after 1 minute of fighting when Parker wrestled the freshman into the tim- ers' t a b 1 e. Although Olmstead's shoulder was bruised he continued to fight but had little chance against the aggresive Parker. Vernon Bishop encountered diffi- culty in beating Ed. Jaros at 155 pounds. Jaros took the advantage at the outset, but Bishop threw him in 4:20. In the 175 pound scrap Harvey Bauss won handily from Al. Odevssef, scoring a fall in 5:27. Ed Butler lost to Don Lewis at 145 pounds after the former had taken a lead on a time advantage. C ristmas At Home.. Something Useful, Practical and Inexpensive for Dad or Brother.
