Recount Begun To Determine Election Vote Position Of Secretary Of State To Be Decided By Canvassing Board Soon LANSING, Dec. 1.-IP)--A recount' to determine whether Frank D. Fitz- gerald, Republican incumbent, or B. J. Abbott, Saginaw Democrat, was elected to the office of secretary of state in the Nov. 8 election was un- der way today. It was believed the result will be known next week. The state canvassing board di- rected that recounts in outstate pre- cinctshdesignated by Abbott be made in the following ,order--Gratiot, Oakland and Genesee counties today, Gogebic and Muskegon counties Fri- day and Kalamazoo Saturday. It was planned to complete the outstate tabulation this week and the board hopes to begin a recheck in Wayne county Monday'. The possibility that the recount will not have to be finished existed. Abbott has asked for a recount in 298 districts, 106 of which are out- state in the counties mentioned, the remainder in Wayne. Fitzgerald countered with a petition for a re- count in 749 precincts, mostly in Wayne county, where he ran behind. If the recheck in the outstate dis- tricts designated by Abbott fails to produce- gains for the Saginaw Dem- ocrat and the early returns from Wayne do not yield the desired re- sults he may ask for discontinu- ance. Professor Maddy's Radio Band Meets For The First Time A band assembled last week in Ann Arbor for the first time and played together. They had never seen each other before,. but they had all taken the same course in the playing of band instruments given over the radio by Prof. Joseph E. Maddy, of the division of fine arts, who has been teaching nearly 4,000 pupils to play in this way. This band was composed of pupils from schools within 100 miles of Anr: Arbor who had followed Professor Maddy's course for the year. The les- sons were presented by the Univer- sity Broadcasting Service and broad- cast by station WJR, Detroit. Professor Maddy explained the methods which he had used in giv- ing these lessons in a program which was broadcast yesterday afternoon. He said that he had his ten-year old daughter take a course on the playing of the clarinet in a room where he could see her but not hear her as she followed the course. When she had mastered each principle, he .aia, she would nod her head and the lesson would continue. By keeping apace with the prog- ress of his daughter, Professor Mad- dy said that he was able to make ~ne courses fit the ability to learn of the average pupil. Post-cards were also sent out to the students who had asked for books of instruction requesting constructive criticism.
