Al Blumenfeld was fourth in the shot-put, and Cass Kemp plaged fourth in the 70-yard dash. That is the story of Michigan's in- vasion at the West Virginia Relay Games, in a short paragraph. But it is not the whole story. The regu- lar two-mile relay had been cancelled the previous week because no suitable competition could be located. Turn- er s victory carried out the press pre- dictions, but Lemen's bid for a sec- ond was too much for the weary field in the stretch. The 880-yard pair were highly successful even without their favorite relay. In a field of better-than-fair hur- dlers, Egleston and Pantlind breezed through to victories. It begins to look like a championship shuttle-hurdle relay team with Egleston, Pantlind, Ward, and either Haeffile or Jackson teaming together. Doc Howell laid behind for three- quarters and then turned on the kick to leave the entire field and won the mile in fair time, 4:34. He ran against a smart field and demon- strated to most everybody's satisfac- tion that the converted two-miler can run fairly well at the shorter distance. Kemp, Lemen, Egleston, and Tur- ner teamed up for the last event of the J-Hop evening, the medley relay, to add a climax to Michigan's inva- sion. The full distance was a mile and the Wolverine quartet led most of the way.. Although no points were awarded by the officials of the meet, the press scores gave Michigan a total of 40, a huge lead on the nearest competitor. R EVENGE was slopped all over the East Lansing court last Saturday night, when Coach Cappon's quintet rubbed the Spartan noses into the floor, 28 to 16. Not being satisfied with a simple victory the Wolverines kept the home team scoreless during the last 15 minutes of the game, making 13 points during the interum. The State cagers are wondering just how they happened to beat. Michigan here early in the season., SIX GOOD and true professors de- cided that this column should con- tinue under the present directorate and backed up their opinions with six good and true marks. For which we thank them heartily and promise not to divulge their names to those who think otherwise. Ineligiility Takes Toll Of Swimmers Ineligibility, that bugaboo of ath- letes, seriously dimmed Michigan's chances of winning Big Ten and na- tional swimming titles this year when it took Taylor Drysdale and Ogden Dalrymple during the examiation period. Coach Mann was counting heavily on Drysdale's taking the backstroke event and planned to use Dalrymple in the relays or sprints in the open- ing meet with Northwestern Friday night. The Wildcats undoubtedly will be the team to beat if Michigan is to take the Conference title, and for that reason the Wolverine nata-* tors have been pointing for Friday's eet, although they swim against Chicago on the following night, Wolves Succumb To Late Goal In Hockey Thriller Ferries Stars For Te Teams To Clash E Again This Evening ech; Here By ALBERT H. NEWMAN Four goals in the final five minutes of a hockey thriller. lastnight at the Varsity Arena saw Michigan Tech's sextet ride through a desperate Michigan rally and score the final marker to win, 4-3. The contest fea-. tured fairly fast play throughout with a finals whichabrought more than a thousand cheering spectators to their feet. The first period saw both teams playing conservative hockey and there was no scoring. Crossman drew firstblood at 3:37 in the second period with a short shot from the right which breezed past Goalie Maki of the visitors cleanly. Tech retail- l ated 12 minutes later with a goal by Ferries, right wing, which found its way through a crowd 'of players be- fore the net to catch Jewell unawares. Tech Scores Again After seven minutes of the third period, Ferries scored again on a pass from Croze, and he again tallied with just five minutes to play as Jewell came out of the net too far for the puck after a stop, and Chapman came in to cover the goal just a frac- tion of a second too late. Michigan sent four men down the L ice in an attempt to even the 3-1 score and Reid took a pass from David close to the net and stretched the cords for a. tally two minutes later. Michigan trailed by one goal with three minutes to play. Ted Chapman, whose offensive game last night surprised local fans, took the puck just 40 seconds later and scored on a solo dash down the left side, evening the score. Ferries Wins Game The Maize and Blue played incau- tiously after the marker was made and Ferries was able to break loose from the forwards again and elude the defensemen to score the final goal of the game with -two minutes to play, winning the game for Tech. The Wolverines missed the services of John Sherf, star sophomore,.in- eligible due to an incomplete, al-. though Reid was back -on form and Keith Crossman looked better tha.n in any game this season. Hendrick- son and David drew the only penal- ties, and both were in the final .period. Michigan has a good chance to re- venge the defeat tonight as they will play the Houghton outfit again to- night at eight o'clock. The contest promises some good hockey, with the teams fairly evenly balanced. The Lineups Tech Michigan Maki ...........G..........Jewell Daigle.........LD.......Gabler Jacobson ......RD...,... The Wolverine grapplers bowed to Penn State, 22 to 8, last Friday; the succeeding night they fell before the Navy matmen, 22 to 6. The four Michigan victories were secured by Joe Oakley, who won Michigan's only fall, and Jimmy Landrum, against Penn State, and Art Mosier and Bob Helliwell against the Midshipmen. Coach Cliff Keen was somewhat at a loss to account for the one-sided- ness of the matches. Lack of condi- tion appeared the chief cause for the Michigan down'fall, the team having been idle for-the two-week examina- tion period just before the meet. Another contributing factor was the rigorous drive.'. After motoring to Penn State the team .was forced to leave imimiediately after the meet to reach Annapolis in time to fight the navy. About 4,500 persons saw the former match....... The -showing of the team leaves Coach Keen in a predicament, as the lineup for Saturday afternoon's meet with Ohio State is more uncertain than before.. Experiments in the higher weights proved totally unsuc- cessful. In -an effort to bolster the team. HIoward Auer, is working out with the heevyweights. ORLANDO, Fla.. Feb. 13, - (r,') - W. 11.
