Gabby Streett, manag- er of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals, was the only manager or player to be reported and fined. "The rule proved to be unpopula r with public and press," President John Heydler said, "as well as with those engaged in the playing of the game. It is hereby rescinded." The rule was said to have been passed largely as the result of cir- culation of a picture taken in Chi- cago, which, showed a prominent ball player signing a baseball for Al Capone. The picture aroused considerable adverse comment. The American League still has such a rule in force.
