Michigan Varsity swimmers will wind up their dual meet season next Friday night when they meet the Detroit Yacht club natators in the Intramural pool, in the second meet between the two teams this year. Although the Wolverine splash- ers defeated the Detroit stars in the first meet, January 23, by the margin of 45 to 30, the former high school and college stars will give the Wolverines a battle for honors. Lesser Places Counted. The ability of the Wolverines to win the first meet was due entirely to second and third place victor- ie$, as the Auto city team forced the Maize and Blue to divide first honors with three each. The race in which the most com- petition will be met on Friday night will undoubtedly occur in the breast stroke. McClellan defeated Miller and Lemak in Detroit in January in a heart-breaking finish, just barely touching the pool-end ahead of the Michigan captain. In the 50-yard free style, Curtis de- feated Schmeiler, a n event in which the Wolve star rarely parti- cipates. The water polo battle will prove another interesting feature. In the January meet, the Wolverines de- feated the Yacht club 11-5 in the first home defeat for the Detroit- ersin their history. The club swim- mers will be out to avenge this de- feat and even matters for the year. Former Wolves to Swim. Two former Michigan swimmers are among the personnel of the Detroit natators, Dick Spindle and I George Hubbell. Other members i are Howlett, backstroker, Oxley and Schurig, divers, Lehigh, free style, besides Curtis and McClellan. This meet will be the final ap- pearance of the Michigan Varsity before the National Intercollegiates March 25 and 26. Martin. For the first time since Henrit Cochet and Rene Lacoste teamed toget1er to wrest the historic Da- vis Cup from the American defend- ers back in 1927, the French nation will not be the decided favorites to win the Challenge round on the ground-brick courts at the Stade Roland Garros in July. Conditions have changed consid-- erably since that day: Rene Lacoste will be returning to Davis Cup com- petition for the first time-since he lost to Bill Tilden and defeated John Hennessey in 1928. Jean Bor- otra, one of the most colorful fig- ures in international tennis and one of the "Three Musketeers," has definitely abandoned Davis Cup' play. Jacques Brugnon, Cochet's famous doubles partner, has decid- ed that at his age, 37, he must quit competitive tennis. Christian Bous- sus, Andre Merlin, Pierre Landry and Marcel Bernard are not yet in the class with the foremost stars ofk other nations. France. But Cochet, almost s handed, turned back the Br youngsters. But this year, both Britain the United States are conced better chance. Lacoste canno turn to the form necessary to feat either of the English sta Vines, Lott, Shields or Wood o American team by July.
