The unemployment situation has broken through the University lines and, according to reports has thrown students seeking part-time jobs for a loss. Not only are there more students than jobs; the employment bureau in University Hall looks like a foot- ball contest-with the, students in a huddle. The situation is so acute that it is feared some students may be forced to withdraw because of low resources. In order to obtain jobs for stu- dents, Miss Elizabeth A. Smith, in charge of the bureau, has sent out a call to Ann Arbor residents who plan to offer students board in re- turn for part-time service. The call was in the nature of a plea to notify the bureau of board, room, or odd jobs. This, Miss Smith explained, would enable students to locate perma- nently and enable them to give the University the required address by Sept. 28, when classes start. Few requests have so far been received for student help, Miss Smith said. In her report for 1930-31, Miss Smith stated there were 156 re- quests for students to Work for their rooms; 784 requests for dining room for odd jobs. During the past year 1252 students applied for work, 200 less than the previous year. In addition to the employment bureau in University Hall, the Stu- dent Christian association, with headquarters in Lane Hall, State street, has sent out an appeal for listing of jobs for students. Union to Hold First Dance ThisWeek-End The Union will hold its first dance of the season from 9 to 12 o'clock Saturday in the ball room. The pur- pose of the "Pre-season Dance," ac- cording to Hugh R. Conklin, presi- dent, '32E, is to allow the freshmen to become acquainted with the Un- ion social functions. Don Loomis and his orchestra have been secured again this year by the Union and will play at the dance. Work on Directory to Begin Tomorrow Sophomores and second semes- ter freshmen wishing to try out for the Michiganensian and the Student Directory should report at once to the Michiganensian editorial office for assignments, Ben McFate, acting editor of the publication, announced yes- terday. Work on the Student Directory is scheduled to start tomorrow, he added.
