AS GRIDIRON aCH
Cann, Former All-Round Stellar .
Player, Named to Succeed
Chick Meehan.
NEW YORK, Jan. 28.-(IP)-New
York University, in recent years one
of the Titans of the gridiron, has
reached into the ranks of its alum-
ni for a new head coach of foot-
ball as the first step in its avowed
intention of de-emphasizing the
fall sport.
Howard G. (Jake) Cann, '20, was
appointed head foot ball coach and
physical director yesterday, with
the added title of assistant profes-
sor on the university faculty.
He succeeds the dynamic John F.
(Chick) Meehan, who resigned six
weeks ago.
For a decade, since he was the
greatest all-around athlete ever
produced at the school, Cann has
been associated with the Violets in
some capacity. His father, Frank
H. Cann, has been there for 37
years, the last20as physical direc-
tor. He relinquishes the post now
to his son.
Under the university's new policy,
it will make no difference whether
Cann succeeds in turning out win-
ning foot ball teams, declared Prof.
Philip Badger, chairman of the
board of athletic control.
The length of Cann's contract
was not announced, but Prof. Bad-
ger gave the impression that the
job would be permanent.
