With seventeen preliminary bouts having been run off yesterday af-r ternoon, today brings the semi-fi- nals in the biggest wrestling tour- ney of the year, the University Championships. The matches arel scheduled for 4 o'clock in the mat room of the Intramural building. This afternoon's card contains sixteen bouts in the semi-final round, two matches in each of the weights. The participants in the tourney are mostly members of the Varsity and freshman squads, every student being eligible except letter- men. Coach Cliff Keen has been di- recting the activities of the Var- sity grapplers, while Coach Kelly has been rounding the first year men into shape. In the first preliminary bouts, there were two very unexpected up- sets. In the 147 pound class Land- wher spilled the dope and gained a fall on Horner, and in the 177 pound weight Finch came through to put it on Frisk, the favorite, pin- ning him to the mat. Frisk's loss of the bout was undoubtedly the result of an injured shoulder which he had received earlier in the af- ternoon. This match was well un- derway when Frisk's shoulder was G thrown out of place; and it had to be postponed for a while. The largest number of competi- tors were in the 147 pound division in which it was necessary to run off nine bouts before reaching the semi-finals. Although the meet was won by only a two- point margin, the exhibition which _ the Maize and Blue swimmers put on gave much better promise than that.
