Curtis of the observatory here will leave October 1, for a six or eight weeks study of the mountings and mechanical features of the large telescopes of the Pacific coast. Dr. Curtis intends to go first to Victoria, B. C., then after a few days at the Lick observatory where he spent nearly twenty years, to go to Pasadena and Mt. Wilson. At this observatory plans are under way for the constructioi of a re- flector of 200 inches aperature, the{ largest ever to be attempted. Actual construction of the reflec- tor here has been postponed because of the depressio , but final plans are taking plac , and Dr. Curtis will spend the balance of the semes- ter in working out the details. When completed, it will be the second largest in the world until the new 200 inch is com'pleted, after which it will rank third. Every effort is being made in the design of this giant instrument, which will weigh perhaps 125 tons, to make it the most flexible great telescope in existence, in the ease with which it can be changed from one type of astronomical research to another. :.
