1, 1931 T H E MYICH I CA N D ATECY MILDCTS TO FACE WESTERN[VETERANS Nebraska Has Strongest Team in Years Ready to Combat Northwestern's Men. (Special to The Daily) EVANSTON, Ill., Sept. 30. -Two weeks of practice have served to onvince Coach Dick Hanley that lis Northwestern grid team will rise r fall this season on the perform- ance of available reserves. The Wild- ats have what appears to be a trong first string lineup, but after onsidering the regulars, the re- naining crop of candidates falls off naterially. Such is the situation confronting he Purple grid team as it prepares o meet such strong opponents as Nebraska and Notre Dame on suc- eeding Saturdays. The Cornhusker ilt Talls on Oct. 3 and the much- liscussed Notre Dame encounter he week following. Opener to be Tough. Seldom has a team been called ipon to face such opposition in its arly games., Nebraska has what is eputed to be its strongest team in ears while Notre Dame appears to e coming along with another of its reat teams. With the exception of one end, -oach Dana X. Bible of Nebraska vill send a veteran team against he Wildcats. The veteran line is ieaded- by hugh Rhea, 220-pound ackle, who won all-American rec- ignition last year. Rhea is playing its third year of collegiate football nd while he smashes the beam at Well over 200 pounds he also is fas,. n addition to his football prowess we is the national collegiate shot ut champion. Rc to Play Tackle. Rhea will play one tackle against Vorthwestern while the other tackle ost will be held down by Jim Gil- ert, who was out of competition a st year but was a member of the 929 team which won the Big Six onference championship. Everett Kreizinger stacks up as he Cornhuskers' principal back- ;eld threat. He was one of the star nembers of last year's team. Work- ng with Kreizinger in practice has een Marvin Paul, who last season Was one of the outstanding ball :arriers on the squad. Preshman Football Squad Now Numbers More Than Hundred The freshman football squad went over the century mark yes- I terday, twenty more men report- ing to Coach Ray Fisher. Up to practice time yesterday a total of 105 suits had been issued. So far, Coach Fisher has had little time to look over the mater- ial, but with the suits all issued, he now has more time to look over the squad. For the first few days the squad will be divided into groups according to position in or- der that some conception of their abilities may be formed. Wprk so far is mainly condition- ing, the players getting the "feel° of the ball" with punting and pass- ing sessions. Work on fundament- als will not start until later in the week. Ward, all-state end from De- troit, showed a little the best punt- ing ability, his kick traveling yards fart')er than the others. Txjured Members Again Report for Light Drills Before Opening Games. (Continued From Page 6) tackles. LaJeunesse and Hozer worked the guard jobs with Mor- rison handling the pigskin. Tess- mer did the signal calling while Fay and DeBaker filled the berths at half. Sol Hudson was sent in at full. Jack Heston later relieved DeBaker at half. In the meantime, Harry Newman, Hazer and Everhardus were given a session of place kicking for extra paint, a factor which snay mean the margin between victory and defeat in the coming scrap. This lineup leaves plenty of equally as good material for the second squad which must be pitted against one of the two teams in the double header. Besides New- man as signal chirper, there are Jack Heston, Everhardus, Stine- spring, Schmidt, and Renner to make up another backfield with possibly Rod Cox if his knl e is in condition to permit his playing. Petoskey is certain of landing one of the other flanks with Dan- iels, Kelley, or Wistert on the oppo- site end. Cooke is second choice to Morrison at center thus far and should get in the game. This was not before Wood gave his team a leadIi however with a field goal.I Two passes brought the ball to, the two yard line before Michigan fumbled and Minnesota recovered. The Gopher's pass defense was at its height that afternoon and few of Newman's heaves found receiv- ers. One pass was knocked dowr behind the goal line. The Associated Press selected Newman for their All-Conference quarterback at the end of the sea- son. Newman is slated for the regular quarterback as he starts his sec- ond season. In recent scrimmages Harry has shown considerable de- velopment as a ball carrier. His off-tackle and end runs will sup- pliment his passing ability.
