(Doc) Meanwell said yes- terday when discussing basketball prospects at the University of Wis- consin. For two months the little doctor has been working daily with a promising group of youngsters and with the opening game now less' than two weeks distant, he is will- ing to discuss the nineteen players who have survived and today con- stitute his varsity squad. To those who have followed Meanwell bas- ketball teams for a decade or more, the mere fact that Coach Meanwell is carrying so many players is sig- nficant. Usually his varsity squad numbers only eight or ten players. "I have definitely abandoned the idea of having a small, shifty clever team this yea'r," he continued. "These boys are, most of them, only eighteen or nineteen years old. They are husky but awkward, but I am going to stay with them and by the second semester, we should be a pretty fair ball team. 'they lack the co-ordination and cleverness which I like but they will improve, slowly but steadily. I shall use a lot of green boys because I can see in them future possibilities which can- not be expected of little fellows. The smaller lads look fine and do many things well but little teams just do not win ball games. Meanwell likes to have one fast, clever forward, however, even when the rest of his team are big, rangy chaps. For this reason he will use Captain Marvin Steen, Russ Tor- nowske and Bobby Poser, his light- weight veterans, at right forward, letting them fight it out for this wing position, along with Fred Mil- ler, a 145-pound sophomore who also is a speed merchant.
