wwNEDAY owETEME 0, 193N REP T T _T ISHER New Freshman Squad to Be One of Largest in Michigan Football History. One of the largest groups of can- didates in Michigan football history have reported to Coach Ray FISer, freshman mentor, yesterday in re- sponse to the first call for yearling talent. A total of 35 suits were issued.1 With such a large 7ubcr on hand, Fisher was unale, to look them all over well enough to form a lasting opinion of the abilities of1 the various men. However, it is fairly certain that a goodly numbei of those reporting are able to boas of all-state recognition from differ- ent localities throughout the length1 and breadth of the land. There is a strong possibility that when all of the hopefuls are on hand tbat the total number will eceed the century mark. No cuts are contemplated in the squad, but enofugh will probably fall by the wayside to reduce the number to about 75. Morrison Will Show Opponents fBusy Tne (Continue from Page 6) , his defensive worth by plugging] the openings ana holding Purdue to short gains. Playing against All-American Ticknor, Morrison showed well, convincing many that he was the better center. His knocking down of passes and hard tackling limited Harvard's chances of victory. When Minnesota tore great holes in Michigan's line, again Morrison carried the brunt of the defensive work. This season Morriso'n is better in' his weakest department, passing the ball back to the backfield men,' and should, barring) injuries, put in a strong bid for national honors. Athletics Given Edge in Hitting, Pitching (Continued from Page 6) will be battling equally hard to lift the crown. At any rate, with these factors considered, the teams look fairly evenly matched, and] all signs point to a real World Ser- ies this year. There is no limit on the entrance number and the pairings will be made ac- zording to the drawings made by the Intramural managers. The new courts to the west of the building will be used for this tour- namnent and the conduct of the I meet will be as speedy as possible I to finish it before too much time has elapsed. The awards offered should stimulate interest for they are a gold medal first place 'and ribbon to runner-up. The late start of this meet should be compensated by a larger field of entrants.e H ARRIERS R EPOR T FOR FIRST DRILL Cross country practice went into full swing yesterday as the varsity and freshmen both went through their first workouts. Nineteen men have reported to Coach Chuck Hoyt for the varsity squad. Among the more promising entrants are Wolfe, Hill, Fitzgibbons, Crawford and Howell, all returning veterans, and Ostrander, Braden, MManus and Bedenik. The first workouts are to be easy, working into a two- my iern in aewee days. tl~1 ~ Coach Ken Doherty signed up about a dozen first-year men yes-. terday on the first day and ex- pects a generous number more. All men were put to work immediately upon enrollment, those who signed up yesterday going through a full workout before leaving. Freshmen practice this year is taking place in Yost field house instead of in Waterman gymnasium as in pre- vious years.T Coaches Hoyt and Doherty plan toe aoindfreshaladfrsitprac- n tic o t some ext e y. The vt a it squad is to he divided into two groups, the second of which will be accompanied by the freshmen on th'e shorter runs. ~SAMMY SQUIRT - CAME THE DAWN HMS, HOOPLP 01-STHE F(ELO 0;: HONOR. - FvMa'ITRI,.G IS kIRRX6Ecp COOTES-fkjJT'S CONFIK)ENr'T OF M~ATPLNIJMG Poy-E~R -& NH~S SLEPT! x - I TEENIG MA'Ye;Cc !
