1931* r THE MICHIGnAN DAIL Y pke Shifts Backs to Fill NEW COMBINA|TON WILL FACE STATE Williamson Is Latest Possibility Put Hudson, Hewitt, and Fay Are Favored. Captain Hudson, Bill Hewitt, or Stanley Fay are the leading con- tenders for the quarterback posi- tiori left vacant when Zit Tessmer was injured in the Indiana game. A new backfield has been experi- mented with in the hopes of putting Michigan's strongest offensive quar- tet on the gridiron Saturday. Williamson is another possibility for the signal-calling job but the threebacks are favored. The nom- ination of Hewitt came as a sur- prise last night as Fay seemed to have the in'ner edge on the selec- tion of plays. Last night Coach Kipke used Captain Hudson and Jack Heston as the halfbacks with Bill backing up the line while a sev- en man line was used and Fay al- ternated with Newman at defensive quarterback. Williamson May Play Safety. The star sophomore has develop- ed into an excellent punt receive'r and will undoubtedly be at the safe- ty-man position on the defense against Coach Crowley's Spartans. I4e received a lengthy workout catching the boots of Jack Heston and Captain Hudson. Heston is a certainty at half- back as he is the best kicker left on the team. If the new backfield ncludes Fay and Hudson too, it will be the best off-tackle and end- running aggregation Kipke can muster. Fay and Heston excell in this department while Hudson shows signs of returning to his old time form of carrying the ball through tackle and around end. Fuilbacks Both Strong. Hewitt oan plunge and probably would take care of the passing un- tUl N14erman would be sent in for this purpose. The Bay City full- back will meet another high school mate when Jones, flashy halfback on the Spartan team, comes here Saturday. Auer, stellar guard, also hails from'ay City. La rOunesse wil le ready for the Michigan State game but, it is doubtful that he will start. Kowal- ik is an able substitute while Can- trill is available for the position. Tessmer has not put in an appear- ance on the practice field this week and his imjury will not be mended sufficiently for the Michigan State game. Coach James Crowley expects that a strong passing offense will give the Capital city team their best chance of winning. He has put his 'team through a long pass- ing drill every day this week and has even tossed some of the aerial heaves himself. Eliowitz to Pass. The Spartarns have Abe Eliowitz to do their passing but so far this season he has not conncted with regularity. A new man might pos- sibly, see service against Michigan in the role as a passer. Coach Kipke is not taking any chances, wit; the Michigan State team running offense. Yesterday lie sent the Varsity through a long defensive drill in stopping the at- tacks at the Wolverine forward wall. Wolves Must Watch Triple-Threat Star . 2 MICHIGAN HARRIERS Wolverine Cross Country Team to Seek Revenge for Defeat Received Last Year. Seven men are scheduled to make up the Wolverine contingent of cross country stars who will leave tomorrow for Madison in an endeavor to revenge a stinging 21- 37 defeat which the Wisconsin hill and dale men administered at the last meeting -of the two teams. Coach Charlie Hoyt's harriers will meet approximately the same' team that defeated the Wolves in 1930. Kirk, the Badger ace, is bound to be a tough man for the Michigan distance men to run into the ground. It will be Doc Howell's task to take care of this man, while Capt. Harmon Wolfe is leading theI remainder of the Michigan squad in an effort to prevent a repetitionI of the last lop-sided meet. In addition to Kirk, the Badgers will be able to place on the track Bertrand, Wright, and Courtright, all veterans of the fast 1930 out- fit. This quartet will be a difficult combination to beat and the Wolges will have to do better than their best if they wish to carry off the lion's share of the honors. The remainder of the Varsity squad will be made up of Hill, Fitz- gibbons, Ostrander, McManus and Braden. The squad will leave late Friday for Madison on the same special with the "Bi" eleven- which is scheduled to also engage the Badgers this week-end. I BADGERS TO END 'B' GRID SEASON Courtright ' Stresses Overhead Attack for Final Game. Apparently undaunted by. the Wisconsin B football team's record, of twelve straight victories, Michi- gan's Jayvees went through yes- terday afternoon's practice session with plenty of drive. The gridders are scheduled to meet the. Badgers at Wisconsin to close their seasonI next Saturday. Drill yesterday consisted largely of a prolonged pass rehearsal for the backs and ends. Meldman, line-bucking fullback, is apparent- ly being coached to take part in the aerial offense, his heaves being mostly bullet-like short ones, and they are fairly accuate. % An extensive practice for the place-kickers was also\ on yester- day's bill; Coach Courtright evi- dently does not intend to see any more prospective wins fade into ties as the result of a wide try for the extra point. Punters, also, were put through their paces. That the Wisconsin aggregation is formidable this season is attested not only by the fact that they will be trying for their thirteenth win, but also by their defeats of the Northwestern and Illinois Junior Varsities. The Badgers are coached by Irwin Uteritz, former Michigan .star. 'Mural Tag Football Starts With D.D. Win Over Buckeye Squad Play in the Independent Touch- Football league has begun with the D.
