There is a penalty for failure to do so. Faculty Alumni Formal Dance Series: The first dance will be held in the ballroom of the Michigan Union on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 9 o'clock. Freshmen are going to pass some courses in this university or it won't be the fault of the Student Christian association in general or of a committee headed by Sher- wood Messner, '34, in particular. Messner's committee has been out organizing tutoring sections and getting instructors to conduct them, with the result that begin- ning tomorrow night all freshmen are going to be welcome at skull sessions in the Upper Room of Lane hall. And that doesn't mean only the men, either. When asked last night whether or not women would be welcome as well he said, "Yes,' indeed!" Instruction, it appears, will be co-educational. Other concerts which are con- templated by the club include an appearance at Mosher-Jordan hall, the date of which has not been an- nounced as yet, and a program at the Cranbrook school in December, 'PHARMACISTS HUNT DRUG SUBSTITUTES' National Research Council Gives Department Budget Increase. Members of the pharmacology department of the Medical School are making headway 'in their re- search work, connectect with the general subject of' drug addiction. According t Dr. Charles W. Ed- munds and Dr. Nathan B. Eddy of that department, many chemical compound: resembling morphine and codeine have been thoroughly tested in regard to their reactions on animals. Two of the compounds are being recommended for clinical trial. In all, about 70 compounds have been sent here by the chemical lab- oratory of the Universfty of Vir- ginia which collaborates with the pharmacological group in a search for possible substitutes for mor- phihe or codeine, substitutes that lack habit forming qualities and still retain their benefical proper- ties. The National Research Council, which is sponsoring the research, was so gratified, it was said, with the results obtained in the work last year, that it has made a liber- al increase in the budget.
