?K 10, 1931 THE MIGHTCAN DAILY ' Tolverines Point for Traditional STATE TO PRESENT POWERFUL ELEVEN Tessmer May Be Unable to Play Against Rival State Institu- tion This Saturday. One of the largest crowds to wit- ness a football game in Ann Ar- bor this year is expected to be on hand this Saturday when the Wol- verines encounter the Michigan State eleven irg their annual class- ic at the Micligan stadium. State has already been allotted 7,000 tickets, and the largest delegaion of Spartan followers to come to Ann Arbor in rescent years is expected to be in the seats on the east side of the stadlium. Coach Harry Kipke yesterday be- gan preparations for the State en- counter with a signal drill on sev- eral new plays. Both schools will have powerful teams on the field, and one of the best games of the season is expected to take place. Tessmer Injures Shoulder. Michigan'sWolveres c a m e through their 22 to 0 win over In- diana last Saturday with but one injury to marr their attack on the Spartans. Estil Tessmer, regular quarterback, was the sole victim. He received an injury to his should-: er which kept him out of the last half of the Hoosier encounter, and which will probably keep him out, of the Spartan battle this Saturday. The Wolverines gave a marvelous demonstration of their power of attack and the perfection of their defense against the Hoosiers. Pre- viously this power on both offense and defense was only hinted at, but on Saturday they really showed what they could do. Michigan was up against one of the strongest lines it has opposed this year and a most capable backfield when it met the Hoosiers, but the Crimson team was unable to make any hed- *way as long as the Maize and Blue regulars were in the game. Morrison Stars Against Hoosiers. Maynard Morrison, Wolverine center, was an outstanding star on the defense and a tower of streng- the on the attack. Playing a rov- ing center on defense, Morrison backed up the line in great style and showed an uncanny ability at knocking down Hoosier passes as well as breaking 'iip their running plays. Another bright star in the Michi- gan line was Ivan Williamson, right end., Williamson started the Wol- verines on their scoring total early in the game by blocking Jones' punt, the ball struck Williamson's chest and rolled over the end zone for a safety and two points for Michigan. In the third quarter Williamson took a pass from New- man and raced 10 yards after get- ting the ball for a touchdown. The Wolverine end also covered punts in excellent fashion. S-MICHAELS-STERN FRESHMEN BEGIN TENNIS TOUR NE Y Twenty men out of a squad of 48 players reported to Coach John- stone yesterday for the beginning of the freshmen tennis indoor workouts this winter. From this large squad, through the means of a ladder tournament; Johnstone will select about fifteen players as the freshman squad to represent Michigan next spring. About ten of this final stquad will be award- ed numerals. Colby Ryan, captain of the Var- sity tennis team, spoke a few words to squad. In his opinion, this year's freshmen have the best chance in a long time to make the varsity next year as five of the present team will-'graduate next June. The final freshman squad will probably be built around Siegel and Nichol, finalists in the Orientation week tournament. At present,,Sieg- el has reached the finals of the All-Campus tournament, defeating many of last year's frosh squad on his march to the top. 49(9(..
