THE MICHIGAN DAILY PA Defense Against .._. . _ SOPHOMORE QUARTERBACK STARS AS HIGHEST SCORER AT PURDUE VARSITY TROUNCESH' YEARLING HARRIER1S C Ostrander Wins Two-Mile Run; 1 Rod Howell Takes First Among Freshmen. s C The freshman harrie s took a 15-40 beating from 'the Varsity yes- terday afternoon in a two-mile race. The course was run from the Ferry field oval out around the Sta- t dium and back. f Ostrander of the Varsity won c over the whole field of over forty { harriers with a time of 11 minutes and 11 seconds. Hill, Wolfe, Fitz- gibbons and Bill Howell followed him in closely. Rod Howell finished only a pace behind his brother to win over the rest of the freshman group. Field in Two Parts. Potchynok, McMillan and Bos- worth took second, third and fourth places among the yearlings, finish- ing tenth, eleventh and twelfth respectively in the field as a whole. The field was divided into two groups. In the first ran the fresh- men who had failed to place in any of the preliminary runs during the past few weeks. This division was minutes over the group comprising the Varsity and the pick of the yearlings. Marr Wins Handicap. Carl Marr won in the handicap field, turning in a time of twelve minutes and twenty-seven seconds. Ostrander, heading the s e c o n d group, was not a minute behind him. The summary of the field that started from scratch follows: 1. Ostrander; 2. Hill; 3. Wolfe; 4. Fitzgibbons; 5. Bill Howell; 6. Rod Howell (freshman); 7. McManus; 8. Braden; 9. LaJeunesse Still Out. La Jeunesse, who will in all prob- ability be out of the Hoosier con- test because of a sprained ankle received in the Princeton encoun- ter, was on the field yesterday watching practice and his sprain -seems to be getting along nicely. Athough he claims he will be ready for action on Saturday it is not likely that he will be back in the lineup before the Michigan State game. John Kowalik or Cecil Cantrill will get the call for the guard berth on Saturday. Both of them have been working in that position in- terchangably during the practices so far this week. Hoosiers Have Injuries. Coach E.C. Hayes hopes to have his Hoosiers back in tip top condi- tion for the encounter, Rehm, Ra- cher, Lyons and Zeller were handi- capped by injuries last week which slowed them down considerably against Ohio State. Michigan will be up against a team that is composed largely of sophomores which started rather weakly but which has been improv- ing steadily as the season moves on. Hayes uses the 'Warner system of attack and the Wolves will have to be in there fighting all the time if they expect to hold the Hoosiers back. Jones at Full Back. Indiana has a great full back in Bob Jones. He is one of the best distance punters in the game and is a tower of strength- in smashing the line. If Michigan is to get an even break on the punts, the safety man will have to run the ball back a good distance. Jones is considered by many as second only to Clarence Munn of Minnesota among Big Ten :fullbacks. Paul Pardonner, signal caller for Noble Kizer's Purdue eleven, is one of those highly touted sophomores that has succeeded in living up to his advance press notices. Since turning out for the Boilermaker team Paidonner has wonI his way to a regular berth at quarter, ankX is at present in fourth Ollace in Western Conference scoring. His 16 joint total puts him only two points behind Fay, Cramer, and Manders. EAST LANSING, Nov. 3. - (') - The attention of Michigan State football coaches today concentrat- ed on Michigan with the reserves assigned to the duty of taking over the responsibility for the Ripon game here next Saturday. While the shock troopers Mon- day were having their initial work- out for the Ripon contest, Coach James H. Crowley's "iron man" eleven were enjoying the beginning of a two-day vacation. A team of yearling grid aspir- ants so lowly that coaches, man- agers, nor teammates could name the lineup sort of gave the horse, laugh to a bruising bunch of Jun- ior Varsity gridders yesterday af- ternoon in an impromtu scrimmage in which the yearlings made the huge B backs look silly as they lost ground time after time in attempt- ed bucks. Neither team scored, but the scrubs, making up a third eleven from the big frosh squad, deserve a moral victory for the way they forced their opponents back almost consistently; and then, just to show how good they really were, the youngsters took the offensive to reel off a series of well-earned first downs. Such was the force of the yearling's drive that Singer, big Jayvee guard, was thrown high in- to the air over the line on one charge. 1Ih DRUGS KODAKS Importers Sale OF BEN WADE II' PIPES TIES FOR FALL. $10.00 Pipes ... $5.95 $5.00 Pipes... .$2.95 . . / Bearing, CHENE Y Style and Fabric owL PA Cheney ties with exclusive designs and fabrics are han- dled only by Wild & Co.
