YPSI LOSES ARNOLD Hoyt to Enter Teams of 9 Men; Rate Above 1930 Harriers for Speed, Endurance. A team of nine crack distance runners will take the track here this afternoon to again renew a spirited rivalry with the Michigan State Normal harriers from Ypsi- lanti, a team which holds the Mich- igan and Central Interscholastic cross-country championships for last season. This same institution has twice in the past two years run the Wolverine harriers into the dust at the finish, and once again they came here with a team which; is said to equal that of last season in speed and endurance. . The run will start at 4:30 this af- ternoon from the track in front of the old Ferry field stands, the new, run taking the harriers to the south and over to the University golf course and then back to the Ferry fields track for the fintsh, a total of three miles.. Hoyt Picks Starters. k Coach Chuck Hoyt announced a team of nine men yesterday who are to be the Michigan entries. Led by Capt. Wolfe, the team will be approximately the same as that which soundly defeated the Detroit Y team here last Saturday, 16 to 46. Howell, Hill, and Fitzgibbons who finished in that order last week are counted on as the best bets of the Michigan squad. Mc Manus, Ostrander, Braden, Darrow, sand Bedenick complete the entry list. The team that Hoyt is entering today is far superior to that which Michigan was able to put into the field against the Hurons last sea- son. Howell has developed into a brilliant runner in the past year and at present he is faster than the inimitable ."Perry Austin was last season. Who will lead a fighting band of Wolverine cross country runners against the strong Michigan Nor- mal team, State intercollegiate champions, here this afternoon. Michigan will try to 'apture its first win in three starts against the neighboring school. Illini Are Pointing for Michigan Game; Berry at Quarter (Specal to The Daily), URBANNA, Ill., Oct.21.-For the seventeenth time since 1898, the football rivalry between Michigan, and Illinois will be renewed Satur- day, with the Wolverines appearing here for the homecoming game. The contest offers Bob Zuppke a chance to even the games won and lost with the only team which holds a series edge since he started coaching Illini squads 19 years ago.' Michigan has not won at Illinois in its last two trips, but it holds an 11 to 5 edge for all-time com- petition with Illini elevens, and the score stands 6 to 5 since Zuppke's reign. To balance the record, Illinois' reorganized team of youngsters must defeat an eleven which con- tains many of the veterans who aided Michigan in gaining the co- championship of the Big Ten last Far from being satisfied with the caliber of the blocking and charg- ing exhibited by his charges in ea.rly season' games, Coach Harry Kipke, yesterday, gave the major part of his attention to these fun- damentals. Fearful of further in- juring his men, he elected to dis-" pense with scrimmage for the day. Blocking Drill Last Hour. The blocking drill lasted nearly an hour, with Everhardus, New- man, and Hewitt receiving the greatest attention. Director Yost was on hand and assisted Wally Weber in ironing out the various weaknesses displayed. The entire team participated in a long, hard tackling session. Two Varsity tacklers were sent against a lone yearling runner and al- though a few managed to slip through, the results of the drill were satisfactory. The linemen came in for their share of attention, also, being sent through a strenuous charging and blocking workout. Illini Have Strong Air Attack. Having advance information that the Illini have built up a~ strong aerial game Kipke used a backfield composed of Everhardus, Cox, De- Baker and Tessmer in a long de- fensive drill against the Indian pass plays. At the same time that this workout was going on the reg- ular Varsity line-up were brushing upon their offensive tactics. Hewitt, Heston, Fay and Newman composed the backfield. The kicking forces of the Maize and Blue were mobilized for an in- tensive practice, also. Heston, Everhardus, and Tessmer received some attention at punting, while the ends were sent down to cover the receiver. Coach Crowley is developing a pass attack around Bob Monnett at the receiving end. > t Coach Courtright's jayvee aggre- gation underwent a bruising offen- sive scrimmage session yesterday afternoon on Ferry field when they tackled a strong yearling defensive team. ' Getting the offense to click would seem to be the major prob- lem facing Coach Courtright in preparing the squad for the game here next Saturday. The jayvees were held on downs by Ohio last Saturday every time they pulled into scoring range.' Meldman, a plunging fullback, and the "find" of the week, played well against the determined fresh- men, who held the B machine well in check for the first ten minutes. Then the new plays began to click, and Schmidt, Miller, and Lindsey, comprising the rest of the 'back- field, got off for good gains. The yearling defense, it should be emphasized here, was no set-up, for the freshmen were in there scrapping. In fact, the freshmen were outcharging the jayvees in the line for part of the struggle. Also, the plebe line was strength- ened by fresh material at every sign of -weakening. Used in Practice, Developvarsity The yearling football charges of Coach Fisher, after several weeks1 of coaching in fundamentals, as well as the plays of Chicago and Ohio State are really starting to render valuable service to the men-; tors of a varsity squad which, once1 defeated, is striving hard to stage a comeback. Varsity tackling, blocking, and line charging has . been woefully weak, and the coaches have been drilling the squad to offset these defects. But when it comes to a necessity of having real live scrap- py opponents, it is the freshmen who get the call. Few who saw the determined stand made by the frosh defensive team against the jayvee offensive1 machine can fail to realize that they are really giving the upper- classmen far more than just dum- my opposition. The men of '35 dis- played .fine spirit, and they were out there as one yearling expressed it from the sidelines, "To make the B team look like a bunch of mugs." Over on the varsity field, a group of freshman balltoters tried to run through two first-team tacklers without interference, and occasion- ally one of them would break away nicely, showing a pair of educated heels to the would-be tacklers. Freshmen were used in blocking drill yesterday. All-Campus golf competition of the second and third flight is rap- idly getting into the quarter-finals. Four men in the second and three in the third are already this*far advanced. In the second flight on the con- solation side Kitch is in the quar- ters and will play the winner of Kelley and Reindel, while Gross awaits the outcome of the Bunt- ing-Gustin 'match. On the other side of the double-elimination meet Thayer rests in the quarters card- ed to play the winner of Senior vs. Fryer; and Gluch in like ,manner draws his next opponent from the Williamson-Pratt pairing. Speedbali Hindered by Rushing. In the third flight Furst and Koch are ready for their quarter- final match, while Wellman will draw his from the winner of Pond and Shetter. Three men are al- ready on the consolation side. D defeated by Wellman, Muzzy Furst, and Cowan by Koch. Ypsilanti will be able to put a contingent of runners on the track today that should equal in perfor- mance that of last season, for most of the runners are veterans of last year. A serious blow to the Hurons will be the loss of Arnold, brilliant all-around star who was injured seriously in an auto accident last spring. Arnold placed first here in the last meet.
