A converted backfield man star- red as the freshman football squad, under the tutelage of backfield Coach Wallie Weber, of the Varsity eleven, learned a set of Illinois plays last night to present to the regulars. The back was Arthur Patchin, of Detroit, and a star lineman in his high school days. Patchin entered Detroit Central High as a freshman and almost intantly, won a place as center ,on the varsity, being the only first year man to play regu- larly. His work won favorable com- ments from the local sport writers and in his last two seasons at Cen- tral he received mention on several of the honor squads. He captained the eleven in his senior year and due to strength in the line, was shifted to the backfield on several occasions, with great success. Three-Sport Man. Patchin teamed with Ted Chap- man, varsity tackle here, and the two occupied the defense positions on the prep hockey team. Art also played baseball, working as both a pitcher and catcher with equal ability. It was when the yearling team lacked powerful backs that Patchin was shifted from the line position where he had shown up quite cred- itably. He did a very good piece of work in backing up the line in a scrimmage against the "B" team last week and in the drill last night he further distinguished himself as a ball carrier, while he also looked good as a pass receiver on several occasions. Will Scrimmage Varsity. Just when the freshman team will display the Illinois attack is problematical, and although they merely ran through a drill in front of Kipke's men last night, there is no surety that they will actually take the field against the varsity. While this team, which was large- ly the pick of the first year grid- ders was running through the Illi- ni attack, two elevens were picked from the yearlings to oppose the varsity and the "B" team defen- sively. The mxiore experienced squads naturally ripped large holes in the freshman team but the under-dogs, out-weighed, and out-equipped, managed to make a capable show- ing. Change of Style?. The general idea, or hope, is that Jack would find Max's style partic- ularly adapted to him. Schmeling has stepped in and kept hitting in his other battles and this is made to order for Dempsey's attack. Schmeling is young; he has brains enough to know how to take care of himself; and he can hit alnd is tough. But outside of his natural ability the important thing is that he has brains. There are few soft spots in the life of a football coach, and Harry Kipke, mentor of the Wolverines, is finding it out after the drubbing' Michigan took at the hands of Ohio State last Saturday. No sooner are the Buckeyes out of the way than he has to start prepping his team for the Illinois engagement this week-end, and prospects aren't any too bright. Before the present season be- gan, Michigan fans were won- dering who would beat the vet- eran Maize and Blue aggrega- tion. Now, after two 'unimpres- sive exhibitions by the team, the same fans are beginning to worry over the possibilities of a second straight defeat, this time at the hands of the Illini. While such an event is far from an impossibility, the Michigan team will be entering this week's game with a fairly definite knowl- edge of the opposition it will be (Continued on Page 7) HURON HARRIERS HERE THURSDAY YPSILANTI, Mich., Oct. 20.-(/P)- Michigan Normal's cross-country team, Central and State intercolle- giate champions, will meet the vet- eran University of Michigan squad in Ann Arbor, Thursday afternoon instead of Saturday, it was an- nounced Monday by Coach Lloyd W. Olds. Coach Olds agreed to the change which was requested by Charles (Doc) Hoyt, Wolverine coach, whoj is also trainer for the Michigan football squad, to allow the latter opportunity to accompany the grid- ders to Champaign where they will meet the University of Illinois on Saturday. In the two previous years, Nor- mal has conquered the Wolverines at Ann Arbor and this year's meet was to be in Ypsilanti until it was changed with the agreement that the run will be staged over the local course in 1932. all A K® Ll. w.
