Dick Hanley placed his Northwest"-
ern grid team on a malted milk
diet at the opening of football prae-
tice this fall. At the close of the
daily workout -each player is given
a big tumbler of malted milk. The
drink serves to quiet the player's
appetite until they get back to the
fraternity houses or dormitories.

Famous . Illinois Coach Begins
Nineteenth Seasoit as

Bob Zuppke, starting his nine-
teenth year as coach at Illinois, is
planning to develop a strong team
from new material.
The prospect does not bother
Zuppke as some of the greatest
teams he coached, including the
championship squads of 1914, 1918,
1923, and 1927 were largely co:n-
posed of new men.
The Illini, in Zuppke's 19 years,
have won seven Big Ten champion-
ships and have tied for the title
twice. Despite the four losses last
season, Zuppke's teams have a mar-
gin of victory in their series with
all other Conference teams with
the exception of Michigan, which
has won six and lost five.
Illinois lost 14 lettermen by grad-
uation last year but a strong squad
of freshmen has raised Zuppke's
hopes. Although the Illini are not
the pre-season favorites for Con-
ference hoiors, Bob may spring an-
other surprise with a strong sopho-
more team.

out this year by the University of
Wisconsin, which is issuing grid-
iron posters, drum automobile tire
covers and windshield transparen-
cies in identical design. The figure
in all three is that of a halfback
dodging as in a broken field run.

tional rival, Michigan State, here,

they appear to be inferior to the
Varsity at this stage of the season

may develop into really formidable

tough for the Wolverines, but Mich-
