Rated at the beginning of the year as the weakest of Big Ten hockey sextets, the University of Minnesota team that will face the Wolverines at Minneapolis this Fri-i day and Saturday can no longer be classed as easy picking for Coach Eddie Lowrey's Michigan team, which at the start of the season was the heavy favorite to cop the title. Following the double reverse at the hands of Wisconsin's veteran puckmen, after it was slated to take at least one if not both, of the two battles, Michigan's team will find in the Gopher aggregation a worthy opponent. Some basis for compari- son may be made between the two teams, as both of them have faced both Wisconsin and Marquette in early season games. Gphers Downed by Badgers. While the Wolverines fell before the Badgers, 2 to 0 and 1 to 0 in two successive nights, Minnesota also was downed on the only occa- sion on which it faced Coach Carl- son's Wisconsin puckmen, 3 to 1. On the bases of comparative figures that would indicate that the Minne- sota and Michigan squads are near enough on a par to insure two close battles this week. The Wisconsin- Minnesota game was played on the same sort of slushy, bumpy iceI upon which thesWolverine-Badger contest took place. Both Michigan and the Gophers have tasted defeat at the hands of John Hancock's Marquette team, but where the second Michigan game was postponed, Minesota carried on to a tie with the crack Hiltopper aggregation. The score of the Marquette victory over Minne- sota wash6-3, as against a 4-2 win over Michigan. Minnesota Rink Reported Smooth. From these scores then, it ap- pears that any predictions as to the outcome of Friday's and Satur- day'sugames would be near to im- possible. The Gophers will have the advantage of playing on its own ice, but the difference between that and Michigan's smooth indoor rink will not be as great as it was at Wisconsin, as the Gopher surface is1 reported to be one of the best in1 the middle west. Previous exhibitions have shown that Michigan's chances are based entirely on the ability of Emmy Reid and Keith Crossman to count the points, and when ice conditions are so poor that these two men cannot carry the puck effectively Michigan's attack falters. Neither of these men were able to score a single point at either Marquette or Wisconsin, both of the goals against the Hilltoppers being counted by Tommy Courtis, the right wing. Even then one of those markers was sent into the net from a scrim- mage immediately in front of the CAMPBELL SEEKS'ORLD'S SPEED MARK SIDE COURT SHOTS (Continued From Page 6) it might finish in the first divi- sion would not bring the title? lt Ann Arbor. The Wolverines, wahl fast and clever are not uit:e big enough to withstand the charges of their taller op- pcnents. With three out of five Salready in the loss col- iunm it is highly improbable ' that the Varsity will win the r;t of their battles. To change the subject a bit we iSve noticed that the metropolitan newspapers have been riding the s.ort of "rassling." This criticism is no doubt directed at the profes- sional game, but no line is drawn between that phase of the sport1 and the amateur side as practiced by colleges throughout the country. Malcoim Campbell has started for Daytona Beach, Fla., with Bluebird II, shown above, whereT he will attempt to better the world's speed record, early in February. The Bluebird II, is 25 feet 6 inches l long, weighs two and one-half tons, and costs around S100. The Campbell-Napier motor will develop 1,400 horse power and is expected to send the English speed king over 231, miles an hour. The streamlined body was tested as a miniature model in a wind tunnel. From these tests Campbell stated that No. 2 has "50 percent more power." However the machine itself will receive its first trial when wheeled out on the Florida sand. Campbell is bringing along 30 sets of 16-ply tires, enough for exactly 30 runs over the mile course.
