(Continued From Page 6) the game, for 17 free tries at the basket, ten of which were cashed in on. By this victory, the Wolverines served notice on their future op- ponents that despite the dis-heart- ening defeat they suffered last meek they are still very much in. the running for the Conference 1931 title. With but one loss out of three games entered in the red side of the ledger, the scrappy Michgian team is still in the race, a race which, despite pre-season predictions, may allow the winner to lose as many as four games. The team which, Coach Veenker put on the floor last night, and which played the entire game with- out substitutions, showed signs of developing into AITENHOF one of the strong- est quintets Michigan has had in years. At least three of the players show signs of All-Conference abil- ity with Daniels, Weiss, and Alten- hof showing the way to the rest. This trio was in on every play last night. For the invaders Nelson led the offensive with seven points to his credit, while co-captain Chmielew- ski proved dangerous whenever he broke lose from the close guarding of Weiss, and added four points to his team's total. The stocky Badger veteran was the outstanding star for Wisconsin on the defense, many a dangerous Michigan attack end- ing with the ball in his capable hands, from where it started up the floor in a counter attack. i u .. . .v..xaa.,.a..b, .aa....v. There is a possibility that this meet will form the only real compe- tition for the Wolverines before the opening of the Big Ten season next month as the crack tank team that represents the Chicago Athletic; Association is as yet uncertain as to the advisability of incurring the expense of a trip to meet the Wolves here. POLO TEAM LOSESI TO DETROIT CLUB! Michigan's Varsity water polo team gave a fine exhibition of the game in the preliminaries of the elimination tournament at the De- troit Yacht Club Saturday after- noon, but the team representing the Yacht Club took matters into their own hands in the finals that evening and crushed the Wolves, 11-5, to win the series. The victors received the Commodore Sorenson trophy, which is awarded annually to the best water polo team com- peting. The preliminary game was won by the Wolverines, 4-3, over a strong team from the University of Tor- onto, Intercollegiate water polo champions of Canada. However, the small pool handicapped the Maize and Blue to some extent, and the Detroit team. played heads up polo throughout to win the title. Contributing most toward the de- feat of the Michigan poloists were f o u r former Wolverines varsity swimmers, Watson, Walaitas, Spin- dle, and Hubbell. MIAMI-Win Day, 15 year old Chicago golfer, won the Miami mid- winter amateur tournament Sun- day when he defeated Lee Chase,t Buffalo one up at the 40th hole. A faculty water polo team will meet a combined Varsity-Freshmanr squad at 5 o'clock tomorrow after- noon in the Intramural pool. A hard battle is predicted as the ordinary rules of the game are brushed asidef to a certain extent in this game and both teams will be out to vindicate the groups which they represent. In last year's encounter the Fac- ulty succeeded in overcoming the strong opposition of the Varsity- Freshman aggregation that boasted some of the best swimmers in the Western Conference. With this sea- son's Varsity-Yearling team com- posed of several veterans and a number of new men the Faculty is anticipating a victory, as they have a squad of 27 swimmers from which to draw. A number of the faculty men have made themselves known in their practice games which have often turned out to be fierce con- tests. Brier, Slawson, Wheeler, Gor- dy, Guthie, and Hall are outstand- ing members of this squad although several others have shown flashes of ability as bolists. Other members of the squad in- clude, Graham, Cohen, Walton,; Blott, Kipke, Petrie, Boston, Eaton, French, Hughes, Knudson, West, Lincoln, Pevine, Oliphant, Rouse, Cowgill, Cole, Wickett, White, and Green. The strength of the faculty team is practically unknown this season as they have played no outside contests, while the Varsity team has already been tested in several games, and with the addition of several first year swimmers, will be certain to give their opponents a stiff battle.
