Grien Shaw ......... RG....... Decker Michigan will open its 1930-31 basketball season tonight at 7:30 o'clock when Western State Normal invades the Yost Field House to match points with Coach Veenker's brand new quintet. The Teachers will trot out on the floor tonight with four of their regulars from last year's undefeated team again in the line-up and with three re- serves and a host of promising material to fill the one gap at cen- ter. Michigan on the other hand will have but one regular from last season on the floor, in Hank Weiss, star forward, and one man wo won a letter but did not play in all of the games in Norm Daniels. The other three Michigan men are fast, clever players, but have as yet to prove their ability under cole iate fire. Shaw, Altenhoff, and Eveland are all promising netters, and Michigan's hopes for success this year will depend largely on how they stand up under the pace whicht is sure to be set for them. Lack Iheight. For the first time in many years' the Wolverines will take the flor without at least three six-footers i the line-up. None of the men who are slated to start tonight reach that figure, and with such being the case, it is probable thatI Coach Veenker will rely upon speed and cleverness in handling the ball whereas in years past he has been able to over-play, if not out-play his opponents. The men on the Varsity are ad-I mirably suited for this style of competition, since they are all ex- ceptionally fast, and whether they will be dangerous to their future Conference opponents will be se- tled tonight. The Western State team is an adversary which would test the strength of the best teams in the country, and much will be told about the Wolverines strength1 by their showing against the in- vaders. Roost Winning Streak. Winning 17 games straight last year from the strongest teams of its class in four states, Western State established a record for wins which they hope to equal this season, and with four of the men who helped again in the line-up it is highly probable that they will. In Co-captain Byrum, Coach Buck Read has one of the finest forwards in the west. He led the Michigan Conference in scoring last year, and reports from Kalamazoo state that he has his shooting eye again this season. Not a man on the Western State team last year scored under 100 points, a fact that in itself proves that Michigan will need a stout defense tonight if they are to win the game.
