FIRST LOSS FOR, STATE
Undefeated for a period of four
years Michigan State's Varsity
cross country t e a m yesterday
morning bowed before a strong
Wolverine squad of harriers, 22-33.
The Spartans star, Chamberlain,
however, ran true to form and fin-
ished first followed by four MaizeI
and Blue hill and dalers, Austin,
Howell, Wolfe, and Fitzgibbons.
Conrad and Steimle, both of State
finished sixth and seventh with
Crawford, the fifth Michigan man
placing eighth.
Austin, the lanky Wolverine pride
set out to stay with Chamberlain,
but the task was too great, and the
Spartan flash crossed the finish
line just 21 minutes and four sec-
onds after the starting gun, beat-
ing Austin by 23 seconds. In spite
of the gruelling task of running
four miles up hill and down around
the new university of Michigan
golf course, the remainder of the
group finished pretty well bunched
togcether.

the current economic depression.
They realize that extraordinary ef-
forts, including sacrifices, must be
made by those with means to come
to the assistance of those who are,
or may be, in want.
"The Board, therefore, voted that
Michigan's share of the net cash
receipts that may be derived from
the final game of the football sea-'
son, namely that with the Univer-
sity of Chicago, a rival of long
standing, scheduled for November
22, shall be turned over to the Gov-
ernor of the State to be allocated
by him in his discretion for charita-
ble purposes.
"No one at this date can tell what
would be the' ticket sale for the
Chicago game if orders were to pur-
sue the~r normal course. It seems
I not unlikely, however, that under
these conditions, there would be
perhaps 30,000 or 40,000 unsold
tickets. It is our confident belief
that, with this opportunity made
available for the assistance of
worth tcauses, those remaining tic-
kets will all be taken. It his been
pointed out that thousands of peo-
plo would welcome an opportunity
by buying tickets for a football
thus to contripute to the relief of
those in distress.
The Board expressed its willing-
ness not only to devote all of its
share of the net cash proceeds de-
rived from the regular scheduled
sale of such football tickets, sbut it
also declares its willingness and
desire to hold as a separate fund
for the same purpose, any excess
over the regular scheduled prices
($3.00 for stand seats and $4.00 and
$5.00 for box seats) any purchasers
may be disposed to pay for tickets.
rThe Board also voted to donate
free of charge, the use of the Mi'ch-
igan Stadium for any other games
between teams, the aim of which

F'ollowing their scrimmage with

Vichigan Varsity declared yester-

,erious work of preparing for the
Harvard clash next Saturday.
There apparently will be plenty
>f work for the team during the
- ext few days if the Wolverines
hope to put a team on the field
that will be capable of stopping
'he Crimson when they meet at
Cambridge. In Friday's scrimmage
the regulars were able to defeat
the yearlings only by a single
opint, 14-13, the freshman eleven
coming back strong in the final
minutes to score the touchdown
that almost .evened the count.
One of the Varsity's touchdowns
came as the result of a pass by
quarterback Harry Newman, while
the other was the result of straight
football. The first freshman touch-
down was made when a recovered
fumble was converted into a score,
