r THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1930 THE MICH IGAN DAILY PAGt SEVEN <.....r DES A S V BTHESE PANTHER WARRIORS WILL TRY TO STOP NOTRE DAME AT PITTSBURGH NEXT SATURDAY A Y9 Mediocre IMlateial Allows Only One Team of Fair Strength From Yearlings. BACKFIELD OF STARSI While the first string men of the Freshman squad were scrimmaging the Varsity eleven, Coach Ray Fisher of the yearling team sent the remainder of his charges through a long drill on fundamen- tals in yesterday's practice session on south Ferry Field. While he has one group of play- ers that is very good, the- majority of Coach Fisher's men are excep- tionally poor. The first string eleven is a much better team than last yar's squad was able to pres- ent, and is an improvement over most of the previous Freshman teams. Heavy Line Tackle to Tackle. The first group has a line that averages 180 pounds from tackle to tackle, which is considerably hea- vier than last season's Freshman line, which had one of the lightest bunch of linemen that ever played on a first year team at Michigan. Besides being made up of big men the forward wall is composed of players who have had a great deal of football experience before com- ing to Ann Arbor. In the backfield of this combination are men who made a name for themselves while playing high school and prep foot- ball. Included in this bunch are Ratterman, Everhardus, Renner, and Springstein who were very out- standing on the gridiron before making their debut at Michigan and who are living up to their past reputation as members of the Freshman eleven. No Varsity Material. In addition to this group of play- ers Coach Fisher has another bunch of linemen that is fairly good; but the rest of the squad is practically impossible to convert into probable Varsity material for future years. The men in the last class have had very little, if any, previous football experience, and they show no natural aptitude for the game. Those that have displayed any real football are all so small that there is not much chance for them when there are so many good players. Taken as a whole this year's Freshman squad is about the poor- est that Coach Fisher has ever had to work with. Every year the turn- out for the yearling team grows smaller, this fall there were about 100 candidates who reported at the beginning of the season while a year ago there were 125 men out for the opening practices. At pres- ent the size of the squad has dwindled to about half of what it was earlier in the fall. During the last half of November the yearlings will play one or two games with the Physical Education team. The two elevens should be pretty evenly matched as th Phys- ical Eds also have some former high school stars on their squad. Zuppke Drills Illini to Perfect Defense (Continued From Page 6) and "Ack" Bodman ought to break into the warfare before long. Ted Schumacher, a 165-pound fighter, who has never earned a reward in two years of service on the squad, has displaced Johnny Bauer at center. The Illini are particularly weak in reserve material. When Zuppke sent in his substitutes in the clos- ing portions of the game Saturday, the Wildcats second string players carried on the work of their regu- lars and, scored the fifth touch- down. NEW YORK-Young Stribling will be out to show the New York scep- tics that he is really worth some- thing when he steps into the ring to meet K. O. Christner, Akron heavyweight fighter. He has been hailed as the next world's cham- pion. I INTRAMURALS (Continued from Page 6) semi-finals this week. Several survivors are still listed in the tennis rankings, including Muzzy, Waring, Sandusky, Nisen, Wells, and Renick. All are unde- feated as yet and will be paired off for play as soon- as the weather permits. Play in the golf tourna- ment competition is lagging with only three men in the quarter-fin- als as yet. Keitetz, David, and George are out in front thus far. Cross Country Entry blanks for the Intramural cross country runs which the de- partment is sponsoring this year were sent to all the fraternities on the Campus yesterday. Seven runsj have been scheduled for the season. Fraternity and classes hold team competition, each organization en- tering a three man team. Each competitor is ranked in points ac- cording to the place in which he. finishes. The team with the lowest number of points is declared the winner. The first run is scheduled, for Armistice day, Nov. 11. Beta Sigma Psi took the fraternity hon- ors in 1929. Thus far seven men have signi. fied their intention of competing in the independent class. Silber, Jones, Siegal, Coon, McKenzie, Bowen, and Ostrander are run- ning in the independent class. NOTICE1 Coach Bill West has announc- ed that he will conduct a class in gymnastics every Saturday morning from 10:30 to 12 at the Intramural building. This is open to everyone and experience is not necessary. Notre Dame's Ramblers and the Pitt Panthers, two strong teams who boast victories over Carnegie Tech, will meet in Pitt stadium Oc- tober 25. Above are the Panthei backfield stars who will be fighting to end Rockne's winning streak. Captain Eddie Baker and Franklin Hood led the attack against Carne- gie. Vichigan Mentor Lays Plans fr oxIngShow (Continued from Page 6) coming shows and already quite a few men have turned out from each class, the freshmen leading with about 50 candidates. The better part of the week will be spent in arranging and organizing the classes in order to get down to a definite program of training and instruction. The men that have come out so far are showing a keen interest in the game. Coach Philbin is conducting boxing instruction classes for all who might be interested. These classes meet every Monday, Wed- nesday, and Friday from four to six in the afternoon, and Tuesday and Thursday from seven-thirty to nine at night in the boxing room of the Intramural building. The instruc- tion is free and the only require- ment is that each man attend at least two class periods a week so he may get into the right physical condition. Most of last year's boxing show contestants have returned and will be in the competition again this year. There is plenty of room for all interested in the classes or the shows and no previous experience is required. The workouts for some time will not include anything that is not primarily intended to condi- tion the men. , r I ,l .) , i i t 1' Varsity, Frosh Golf Teams to Play Today Three practice meets between the Varsity and freshman golf teams have been scheduled for this week and next by Coach Trueblood. The first will be played this afternoon and all players who have qualified for the two teams, 10 on each, are expected to report as soon as pos- sible after 1 o'clock at the Univer- sity course. The draw was to have been com- pleted last night, and all matches will start by 1:30 today. Captains Royston and Fischer will take charge of their respective teams.
