Minnesota and 'isconstn are thce other two with perfect bids for the title. however,'in the light of the resuls to date either the Wildcats or the Wolverines are by far the favored aggregations. When thc young Illini eleven lost a 32-0 gamc to Northwestern, the worst licking Illinois has had since 1913, they le; themselves out of the big race and their only hope will be the fact that the rest of the season opponents will atteinpt to coast on them and save up for the tough ones. 1lawkeyes Lose. Iowa lost the -only conference game scheduled this year and have already put in their bid for the .cellar with an average of .000, while the big Purple defending champions were able to boast a comeback from the beating at the hands of the Wolverines. The Buckeyes with two losses to date are definitely out of the running and Ohio has hung up the crepe' for what seemed on paper one of the strongest contenders. Chicago marred the West's inter- sectional standings by dropping their game to Florida and proved that they will not be classed among the leaders this year. Indiana show- ed an improvement but they were not good enough for Minnesota and unless Pat Page can revamp his team they will not figure heavily in the Conference race. Badgers Upset Penn. Wisconsin has established itself as the bogeyman of the Big Ten by completely outclassing the highly- touted Pennsylvania crew. With this win to their credit they will loom as one of the strongest bidders for the honors. Only two Big Ten championship games are slated for Saturday as Wisconsin goes to Lafayette to meet Purdue and the Wolves try to make it three straight when they pounce on Illinois. The Purdue - Wisconsin game appears to be anybody's, but Michigan playing as they did against the Bucks and the Purple should take the Illini. This year, how- ever, Wheeler seems to have struck his stride, and last Saturday was the chief thorn in the side of Wes- ley Fesler, Ohio's All-American end, besides being the Wolverine's great- est ground gainer. Simrall and Hudson, Michigan's two regular backfield men from last year, again put up their customary g o o d games against Ohio State, Simrall especially starring for the Wolverines. The Michigan captain's defensive play and his pass receiv-; ing ability were a great factor in the Maize and Blue triumph. On the line, Williamson and Cox did good work at the ends, Samuels and Purdum starred at the tackles, Hozer and Cornwell went well at the guard posts, and Morrison was a tower of strength defensively at center. The showing made by the whole team was entirely satisfactory from a Michigan viewpoint, and with the added experience and con- fidence gained from the Ohio game, the Wolverines should be hard to stop in the Conference. Although he will be unable to play against the Badgers, a cap- able substitute was uncovered in the Iowa game when Horstman averaged five yards a play. White, varsity quarterback, who has been out with injuries, will re- turn to the line-up for the Wis- consin game. With Ohio State safely out of the way, Michigan has yet to meet Illinois, Chicago, and Minnesota before they can lay any claim on the Conference title. Of these teams Illinois and Chicago should not be able to stop the Wolverine march, but Minnesota may be the stumbling block over which Coach Kipke's hopes of a cham- pionship in his second year in the Big Ten may crash. Illinois suffered the worst defeat they have had in years when Northwestern took them over the road last week, but Coach Zuppke may be relied upon to have a few tricks up his sleeve. The Illini al- ways play their best game of the year against Michigan, and they take 'great joy in beating a Maize and Blue team. The Illini will in- vade Ann Arbor this week set to avenge their early season defeats.
