This game, which is a combination of football, basketball and soccer, originated here at Mich- igan in 1921 and as a result has, spread all over the country and is being used by many universities and colleges as an Intramural ac- tivity. Combines Three Sports Speedball is liked because it per- I mits footwork, handwork, and headwork-all three. Speedball has borrowed the most desirable fea- FALL SPORTS PROGRAM TO GIVE GOLD MEDALS Three afternoons of this week will be devoted to recreational ac-1 tivities for the new students. To- day at 3:30 some 22 groups which have been assigned, will report to the intramural building. These groups will meet in the large gym- nasium where they will be given programs and instructions con- cerning the afternoons' programs.; Following this perioc a tour of inspection will be made, taking in the Intramural Building, Ferry Field and Yost Field House. From this trip everyone will go to South Ferry Field for inter-group baseball games. Groups to Split Immediately after the ball games, which will probably end about 5:00 - o'clock, the groups will split up and everyone will go to the many indi- vidual sport events. There will be the swimming meet at the Intra-. mural pool, tennis matches at the courts on Ferry Field, and rifle shooting also on Ferry Field, in- side the wall. Individuals interest- ed in golf will return to the large intramural gymnasium and pair- ings will be made. Coach Keen will be in the wrestling rooms at the in- tramural building to meet all men interested in this sport. Likewise, Coach Let Philbin will be on hand at the boxing room, intramural' building, to give instructions or to take the names of men interested1 in future instructions.I Tournaments Scheduled Six horseshoe courts at the west end of the intramural building will be the scene of the annual horse- shoe tournament. At the handball) and squash courts there will be tournaments. The Michigan Union will be the scene of a bowling tour- nament for which there is no fee. In the auxiliary gymnasium of the intramural building there will be instructors for gymnastics and fencing. At Yost Field House all Freshmen interested in football will have an opportunity to meet with one of the coaches. Offer Prize Meals Every tournament that is con- ducted will be run on each of the three days of Orientation Week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The winners of each of these days will be paired with other winners and this will continue for the next two weeks until there is a final winner in each and every event. To the winner and runner-up of each event there will be presented a gold medal. The champion rifle shot will, in addition to the medal, receive a rifle, the gift of the R. O. T. C.
