Michigan's sports calendar for this week is not only comparatively weak but also loD--sided. There will be but thrce athletic events on the card for the Wolverine teams and all of them come Saturday night, only one being held here in Ann Arbe':. Coach George Veenker will take nis men out of town to invade Bloomington Saturday night in an earnest endeavor to repeat the de- feat that they dished out to the Hoosiers here last week. Naturally, Indiana will not be entertaining any such ideas, but hope by the advantage of playing on their own floor in part to avenge themselves on the Michigan team. A victory over the Hoosiers will give Michigan that much blptter chance for ending up the confer- ence race near the top. In fact in the event that Minnesota should lose one game while the Wolver- ines are picking up a couple victor- ies, Michigan will finish as the run- ners-up this year. Saturday night will also see Coach Hoyt's indoor track team competing in the Western Confer- ence meet at Madison. Michigan has a good chance to place high in this meet although the weak- ness in the shot put and pole vault events should prove a hindrance. Indiana has a strong aggregation of track star4 this year and will make a formidable bid for honors, while Illinois and Wisconsin are (Continued on Page 7) uOCIU T LANI)INGSPt W. L. T. (BA, A dori( Press) MADISON, Wis., Feb. 28.-Dr. Walter E. Meanwell, who has coach- ed winning basketball teams at the University of Wisconsin for 18 years, believes good students make good basketball players. He is of the opinion that basket- ball and studies go hand in hand, and comments, "I have found that the cleverest basketball players are the cleverest students." As proof, he points to stars of re- cent BAdger fives, Louis Behr, cap- tain in 1927-28, was an honor stu- dent, and Harold Foster, captain last year and an all-conference for- ward for two years, received grades above the average. Marvin Steen, defensive forward on the present team, stands among the highest in his class. Dr. Meanwell calls basetball a "college game," and explains he means that a student can partici- pate in the sport and at the same time maintain high standings. His basketball teams have main- tained the highest academic aver- age of any sport over his long per- iod of service here. Men were successful in a rifle match against the co-eds at the University of Kentucky. The score was 961 to 817. MICHIGAN SWEEPS MINNESOTA SERIS Reid and Crossman Score Goals for Champions; Captain Schlanderer Stars. By John Thomas. Captain Arthur Schlanderer led his team to a 2-U victory over Min- nesota in the final Western Con- ference hockey game at the Coli- seum last night. Playing in his last game under the Maize and $lue colors Schlanderer starred after assuring his team the Big Ten championship in the first of the two-game series Friday night. Reid scored the first Michigan tally when he skated down the sideline alone, evading all oppon- ents, and hooked his shot into the outside corner of the net. The sec- ond score came as Crossman and Schlanderer skated down the ice with only one defense man against them. Schlanderer drew the Minne- sota man off and passed to Cross- man who scored with a back-hand shot lifted over goalie Jones' stick. Both teams resorted to long shots during the first period. Prouse, teaming with Williams held the Gophers at bay making them shoot from in back of the red-line. Mich- igan threatened several times but did not have the final punch to put the score across. Schlanderer and Reid did most of the Wolver- ine shooting during this period. Jones, Minnesota goalie, saved his team from being scored upon time after time.
