Miss Laurie Campbell, professor in the physical education depart- ment, answers the question "Why Physical Education for Women in Colleges'?" in her article of that title appearing in a recent issue of "Progress." She says that "The average girls of college age are not motivatedl in health habits. They have little' regard for their physical welfare. They sleep too little; they eat ir- regularly and not always wisely. Many have physical defects which have not been corrected. The large majority have relatively little skill in sports." In condemning women for parti- cipation in the many indoor activ- ities and in those which require no physical exercise, she remarks, "They shun the outdoors because they do not know how to use it. They have no particular interest or the skill tp engage in any form of sport. Thus they are condemnedl to stay indoors and substitute other forms of activity for vigorous, re- freshing activity, w h i c h would build up the body and insure a saner balance in our crowded lives." .f "If proper attitudes can be es- tablished, if the student is thor- oughly convinced that positive health is not only desirable but the only firm foundation for fu- ture achievements, then the goal, is within sight."
