Coach Thomas Trueblood and his Varsity golf team left at midnight last night for Chicago where they will meetthe University of Chicago in a duel meet Thursday. Upon their arrival in the Windy City they will go directly to the Olympia Fields, number four, course where they hope to get in at least 27 and perhaps 36 holes of play in prepar- ation for the match. To Meet illini Saturday. The trip this week will also in- clude a match with Illinois on Sat- urday. Coach Trueblood indicated before leaving last night that he will take his team to Chanpaign immediately following the match with the Maroons where they will practice all day Friday. As a result of the meet last Sat- urday with Detroit City College, the Wolverine lineup has been ma- terially changed. Jolly, by his showing on that occasion, has dis- placed Livingston on the squad roster. The rerainder of the line- up will be substantially the same as in previous meets, with the pos- sibility that Howard, who so far has not competed in any singles matches, may get the full day's assignment, at least against one of the opposing teams. Warm Weather Helps Game. The warmer weather experienced during the early days of this week seems to have provided the final necessary touch to bring the men around to their best playing form, and the scores, which have been carded seem to bear out this state- ment. Royston, who has been play- ing most consistently, turned in the lowest card of the week, a 74. The remainder of the men have been hovering close to this mark and on the shady side of 80. The match with the Maroons should not present any insur- mountable' obstacles to the Wol- verines in their dash toward a (Continued on Page 7) JOHN SCHMIELER TO TOUR JAPAN John Schmieler, holder of the Intercollegiate 220 breast stroke record and sophomore swimmin* star of the Varsity, has accepted an invitation from the national A.A.U. to tour Japan this sum- mer. The A.A.U. has asked sev- eral other swimmers to accom- pany John in the foreign tour. With the picked team, the A.A.U. h a s scheduled several meets in° the Orient. Besides his favorite breast stroke e v e n t, Schmieler swims the back stroke an d middle distance- c r a w events. With two more years of Varsity competition before him, Coach Mann expects Schmieler to become a Worlds champion. TIGERS LOSE CA PME The world's champion Philadel- phia Athletics visited Navin field yesterday afternon to trim the Tigers, 5 to 0. Earnshaw, Connie Mack's veteran hurler, allowed two1 hits while Hoyt granted nine. Thisl defeat brings the Tigers back even with the .500 -mark, 16 games won and 16 lost. In the only other game of the American league the Yankees gave Cleveland its customary, of late, beating by an 8-6 count. Rain at Chicago and wet grounds at St. Louis interfered with the scheduled games in those cities with Boston and Washington. The Cubs dropped to a place in the National league matching that of Detroit with a .500 percentage from 12 games on each side of the ledger as they gave one to Boston, 5 to 9. Ragged fielding seems to play a large part in the Cubs' des- tiny lately. Yesterday's game pro- duced four errors, and Boston was permitted to bring home nine runs out of ten hits. Hallahan pitched the Cardinals to a 6-2 win over Brooklyn. NET SQUAD DRILLS FOR.0 INDIAN MATCH' W Sets During Practice. Colby Ryan, ranking number 2 man on the Varsity tennis squad, defeated Freddie Brace yesterday afternoon, 6-3, 6-4, in a hard driv- ing duet of sets which kept the number 4 man on his toes the full 19 games. Co.ach John Johnstone is getting his men in shape for the trip to Champaign this Saturday where they will meet the Illini net-' men. Sherman successfully defended his ranking Monday afternoon when he turned back Mills, num- ber 7 man, 6-1, 6-3, in two easily; won sets. Perhaps the latest de- velopment in the tennis lineup which is to be sent against the Il- lini is the improvement shown by Bill Ranck in the doubles play.,Yes- terday afternoon he demonstrated some real form and was easily the outstanding man in the doubles quartet. He will probably be, matched .with Johnny Reindel for the doubles at Champaign and will be the seventh man to make the trip. Last week these two fought a brilliant 10-8 set to break a 4-4' tie with the Chicago court team' and win one of the biggest upsets of the season. Edl.. Hammer still rates as number one man, but it was only by play- ing Freddie Brace against Rexinger tast Saturday that Coach John- stone was able to turn the tables. With Ryan in second place, Bob Clark is number three man and Johnny Reindel number five. These] men will probably be considered for the trip Saturday,.but the lineup is not certain as yet, nor have theI three men who will compete in the Conference meet at Columbus been, selected. Wisconsin's spring football prac- tice was the best since Coach Glenn Thistlethwaite came here in 1927, he said today after the close of the 1931 spring training season. L St. Louis....... AM AT TWELFTH-TITLE Wolverines Favored to Captute Another Big Ten Outdoor Championship. If Michigan can win t e annual Western Conference outdoor track championship next Friday and Sat- urday in Dyche stadium at Nor.tW- western, the Wolverines will lead all the members of the Big Ten with 12 victories since 1901. 1llinois. is tied with Michigan with 11 wins each since that date. When the Wolverines won the teamP championship last year they 'broke the three-year rule of Illi- nois. The odds favor Michigan to add a seventh victory in the last 14 years. Illinois Second Choice. Illinois is the only other out- standing team for the honors tii week-end.tVerne McDermott, hold- er of the American indoor pole vault record, and Lee Sentman crack hurdlei' are Illinois favorite sons. McDermont holds the Confer- ence outdoor record at 13 feet, 10 7/8 inches. Sentman is the defending title holder in both hurdle events but is not as sure of his victories as Me- Dermont. Jack Keller, Ohio State, who ran the high hurdles in :14.3 at the Penn relays which is a new world's record but it will not be ac- cepted as he knocked over two hur- dles, will furnish plenty of opposi- tion for Sentman. Hawley Egleston may upset the dope with a win in the low hurdles. He defeated Sentman last Saturday in slow time against a stiff wind. Hoyt has been spending a lot of time on him this week in order that he will be in the best of condition. Russell Quarter-Mile Favorite. Edwin Russell is rated the fav- of ite to win the quarter-mile race unless Chicago's Dale Letts enters. The latter is equally proficient in the quarter, half, and mile runs. Indiana will furnish the, most opposition for Perry Austin, holder of the indoor two-mile title.
