THE MICHIGAN DAILY' t !ESTO OPEN DUA ETSSON TH GOPHER THINCLADS TOMORHOk Ten Champions First Defense of in Only Home Will Begin Honors Meet. Every Big, Ten track coach will be watching the initial Conference performances of the Maize and Blue thinclads tomorrow afternoon when they entertain the Minneso- ta Gophers on Ferry field's cinder oval in the first dual meet for each school, for the Wolverine's performance in this affair will give the dopesters something to talk about.whgn they come to set down on paper the outstanding competi- tors for the middle west track crown which will be at stake in a couple of weeks. Coach Chuck Hoyt's men are now the holders of that honor and will have to be at their best to trod down the bids of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio State. Only Home Appearance. Although Michigan has shot its big gun in the big relay events it will be no easy team to beat in the in- dividual competition. Tomorrow's meet will see the greatest of the 1931 track stars flash through their performances in the best possible form that they will attain this sea- son, and it will be the local fans' only opportunity to see such out- standing track men as Eddie Tolan. holder of the official world's rec- ord for the century, and Perry Aus- tin, the greatest two miler ever de- veloped at this college where "out- standing athletes are no rarity, be- fore these men pass off the scene for the last time. Entry lists for the Wolverine con- tenders will be announced today, Coach Hoyt said, but the outstand- ing men who took part in the re- lays are sure to be on the honor list which is bound to be large in order that as many of the men as possible can get an opportunity to get into action. Minnesota's ag- gregation 'has not been listed for entries as yet, but the whole squad will be centered around such stars as Capt. Hass, Scheifeley, Heckle, and Munn. Close Race in Dash. Tolan looks like an easy winner, in the dash where the real fight will come between Hass and Jack Campbell for second honors. A win for Jack in this meet will bode well 'or an extra point or two for the Wclves when the boys get together down at Evanston for the Big Ten affair. Such stars as Russell, DeBaker, and Glading will be among the starters in the quarter; Turner and Braden will be carrying the rank- ing honors in the half; Wolfe and Fitzgibbons can be depended on to cop at least first place in the mile; while Austin, Hill, and Howell should cinch the two-mile. In the 120 yard high and the 220 low hur- dles, Coach Hoyt will depend on Egleston, and Haefele to bring hG me the honors in these timber- topping events, with Gafill doing his best to place in the high jump. The Northwestern team will ar- rive in Ann Arbor sometime today for a preliminary tour of the course, in an effort to become acquainted with the hazardous bunkers and tricky greens. Smarting under the 14-4 defeat suffered at the hands of the Illinois sharpshooters earlier in the week, the Evanston boys will be out to vent their wrath on some- body or other, so the match tomor- row cannot be taken lightly. \\ ~ ~. \\ A / ; ~. ft .;~ v~ It, * f~i 7j~ ft' >~ ~ j -'.~ FOR SALE FOR SALE-Festival or three excellent floor.
