(Spacial to The Daily) Playing before a large crwvd and under ideal weather conditions, the Michigan tennis team in its first conference start, lost aheart-break- ing 5-4 match to the strong Ohio team here today.. Deadlock at 2-4. The outcome of*the m--tch was in doubt until the last point of the intensely dramatic first doubles game broke the 4-4 deadlock in fa- vor in favor of the Buckeyes. Al- though leading at 5-4 and their own, service in the third and de- Biding set, Hammer and Clarke after a terrific battle finally lost the match, 6-3, 3-6, 8-6. Weakness in the doubles lost the match for the Wolverines, who had won 4 of the 6 scheduled singles matches and who only needed one of the 3 doubles to insure them- selves of victory. Hammer Stars. Hammer was easily the outstand- ing star of the day in his beautiful 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Dennison, the Buckeye ace. He showed a bril- liant all-around game. His play in the doubles also was excellent. Captain Brace was far from his usual sound game in the match he lost to Hoffman 6-4, 6-1, the num- ber 2 man of the Buckeye squad. Paired with Ryan, in the doubles he dropped a hard 3 set match to Browne and Hoffer 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Clark Wins Miatch. Clarke showed to good advantage in beating Browne of Ohio 6-3, 7-5 as did Reindel with his 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over the Buckeye Kessen. Michigan lost the last singles match when Sherman bowed to 1Holloch, 6-4, 6-8, 6-4. Reindel & Mills drop- ped the third doubles to Lessen & Greenberg 6-2, 6-1. The match was reminiscent of the conference opener which the Wolverines dropped to Northwest- ern last year by a 5-4 score and then swept on to the Big Ten dual championship as today, the match hinged on the final doubles which was lost only by the closest of mar- gins. Ryan, the Wolverine number 3 man, scored an impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over James; as in the doubles, Ryan was a tower of strength at the net.
