Diffly and Kracht Prove Wotth by Play in Game; Compton Pitches Effectively. VARSITY MAKES 16 HITS I Take Lead in Third, Score Four Runs; Tie up Game With Sprees in 7th, 8th. By Jee Ru-selI The 1931 Varsity nine showed+ somewhat unexpected bitting powerI yesterday afternoon in swamping, Iowa on the Ferry $'ield diamond, 12-5. The game yesterday was the Conference opener for the Wolver- ines, and in collecting 16 hits off the delivery of the invading hurlers, Ingraham and Rieke, Coach Ray Fisher's proteges served notice on the Big Ten that they have a dan- gerous combination of sluggers. Especially gratifying yesterday was the work of two new men, Dill- ley, catcher, and Kracht, short stop. By their play throughout the game these two showed that they have clearly earned their right to regu- lar positions on the Maize and -Blue team, and should cause plenty of trouble for the opposition during the coming games. Diffley, Kracht Score. Diffley out of five times at bat. connected for hits three times, while Kracht lined a like number of; drives through the infield, one of them a double. Both men scored one run, while Diffley accounted for nine put-outs, six of them on high foul tips. Kracht had one put-out and four assists to his credit after the last man had come to bat. Michigan counted once in the. first inning, but in the secondI frame, the invaders scored two runs when Compton hit the first man up, Reedquist, to start the inning. Frego then fouled out to Diffley and Riegert singled advancing Reed- quist to second. With men on first and second, Compton walked In- graham to -fill the sacks. At this1 point Porter caught hold of a singlel which scored both Reedquist and Riegert.1 Michigan Scores in Third. Lenfesty and Howard, -in con- quering Duffield and Jones of the Spartans in the first morning match, batted out a stellar best ball score of 69, overwhelming their opponents to mark up a 3-0 score in favor of Michigan. In the other doubles, Royston and Livingston turned back Minier and Mayne on both nines to add three more to the Varsity total. Lenfesty continued his low scor- ing in the afternoon singles match- es, making a 73 which ranked as the best individual effort of the day in beating Duffield, 3-0. Minier, only one stroke over Lenfesty for the 18 holes, made a clean sweep of his match with Captain Royston. Hand Plays Fine Game. Livingston and Hand, the latter newly promoted to a regular post on the Varsity, duplicated Len- festy's record in conquering Disan- tal and Mayne in their singles matches, each winning 3-0.
